Playoff Format Feedback from the Allstar Match

ok, so the purpose of the Allstar match is to test the playoff format tweaks. for those of you that did not know comcast in grand rapids sucks and was down yesterday and the great staff at twl filled in. one of the things i would have done was pulled all the invite/inter teams into a channel and gotten feedback. ***** comcast.

So please give me your feedback on 1. how long it took and 2 how you felt the new format worked.
For the Inter all-star match, it took about 2hrs. That also includes a long wait for players issues in between the maps, around 20 mins IIRC.

I like the format although in another league, we use something very, very similar to it, just fewer rounds per map. It is a good, solid format and I think it will work out well.
ya the only thing that took so long were the substitutions, no spawn,etc...but beyond that it is a nice format
I do think in the future when we do this (As i thought it was very cool) That when we put up a representitive for each team, that we also have an alternate chosen from that team. This way if we have issues like lastnight where Koolaid couldn't continue that team has another player to sub. This way we still have 1 rep from every team. As this is new i know these are little things that get worked out with time. GG's to everyone i would have loved to atleast heard a shoutcast for the inters. Maybe next time we can get both vidcast or atleast one shoutcasted and one vid casted. Just a suggestion. I know it was spur of the moment for the vidcast of the invite match. But we know when our mid season breaks will take place. Why not work it out ahead of time. Good job Rhitty and Co. This has been the funnest inters i have played yet. Even if we do have a big zero wins. It is hard aclimating game play with new players right before a league. But by next season we should be alot better off for it.
Dear Rhitty,

I do believe this format is every bit as fair as last seasons playoff format, but is shortened just enough to make it perfect.

Player issues will always arise and no change in the format will stop them.

From what I see you started with a good plan last season, took the communities input during the offseason, and have it perfect this season. Change nothing.

With love,
Screwtape
What was the format?
The major change is "Best of TWO matches with a long OT followed by Sudden Death" I say skip the long OT and get to the Sudden Death.

If Teams are truly balanced in Long OT, then it will most likely come down to Sudden Death anyway. On the flipside, it won't take 6-10 rounds to determine 1 team is superior at UA.

The playoff format will be used for the matches:
1st Set - map selected by defending team. Assaulting team will get side choice. 10 rounds first to 6 wins the set. Switch sides after 5 rounds. Ties may occur (i.e. 5 wins for assault, 5 wins for defense). All rounds must be played.

2nd Set – map selected by the assaulting team. Defending team gets side choice. 10 rounds first to 6 wins set. Switch sides after 5 rounds. Ties may occur (i.e. 5 wins for assault, 5 wins for defense). All rounds must be played.

OT (if necessary) – OT will be played on UA. Defending team gets side choice. 10 rounds first to 6 wins set. Switch sides after 5 rounds. If tied total rounds won will determine the winner.

Double OT (if necessary) - If total rounds won is tied then sudden death OT will be played on MOUT. Winner take all. Defending team gets side choice.

Example 1:
Team a wins First Set 6 to 4
Team b ties Second Set 5 to 5
Result = team a wins the match

Example 2:
Team a wins First Set 7 to 3
Team b wins Second Set 6 to 4
Teams tie OT set 5 to 5

Team a wins as total rounds is Team a 11 Team b 10

Example 3:
Team a wins First Set 10 to 0
Team b wins Second Set 10 to 0
Teams tie OT 5 to 5
1 Round Sudden Death OT on Mout McKeena

That could make for a very long night for a match.

What if OT was cut to 6 rounds instead of 10
or
Instead of OT being on UA do 2 Sets with the map restriction of Mout, UA or SS Best 2 out of Three.
So Team A might pick UA and win 2 - 1 then Team B can pick SS or Mout.
Sudden Death would be played on the 3 Unused Map 1 round winner take all.

Total OT Rounds would MAX out at 7. Which would be shorter than the possible 11.

I didn't watch the All Star match so I don't know. I am basing my opinion of looking at it.

I agree. The other two maps are slightly biased towards one side, at least more than MOUT.
well, i think the two teams should decide in match coms which map THEY should use as an OT map. they would choose from a list and then that map couldnt be chosen by either team as one of their maps.

Maybe the sides are a little bit more even, but MOUT is VERY heavily biased towards indoors/CQB teams. I think having a mid-ranged or outdoor map as a possibility makes a lot of sence.

I see Honor/MOUT winning more consistently than say, East on UA

LOY for the win,

and to play 2 matches + 3 different maps for OT would mean switching sides 4 times and setting up the server 4 times during the match, OT on 1 map with more rounds would take much less time than 3 maps. MOST of the OT time would be in setup. (assuming NO crits/no spawns)
Why have UA as the 3rd, and essentially deciding map for every round of the playoffs? This just creates an advantage for a 2 map team. I could see a scenario playing out, especially in the lower level leagues, where a team selects the one pub map they play, ignore every other map and just perfect urban from here on out. The playoffs are suppose to reward the best overall teams, not a squad that can sweep thru the playoffs on only 2 maps.

I love the bo3 format and certainly don't want it gone, but I think it does need to be tweaked a bit. You can go about this several different ways, but the easiest would be just announce a different map, chosen from the league map pool, for every round to be played as the 3rd. This would allow for the best overall team that was able to perfect several maps to come out on top at the end.

If it doesn't get changed to that, which I can't see one good reason not to, there needs to atleast be a rule to prevent teams from selecting urban as their map and just playing on that.
and this would only be used if there was a 10 round to 10 round tie after the first two maps, right?
actually, no. OT happens when each team gets one set each, or both sets end in a tie. then you play a third set (unless changed, it would be on UA). if that set ties, then you count rounds won over the match. if thats tied, it goes to MOUT.
