That is NOT true. A number of interviews say that the vehicles have different driving characteristics depending what surface they are on, and have a fairly realistic driving model. Obviously, that wouldn't make any sense if they were on fixed paths like ET.

Some nice comments from Wils (one of the SD guys) here:

Let's look at tanks in ET. Whether on the paved ground of goldrush, or the snowy terrain of fuel dump, the tank moves *exactly* the same.

The items you list above--realistic driving model and differing characteristics based upon terrain--could in fact be fancy ways of saying "when the fixed path is in snow, it'll turn slower than when on grass, etc..."

While I don't think it's a likely case, I don't see anything in your statement that outright dismisses the possibility of fixed path vehicles.

But it has been said that with the physics, you can pull off any trick you would do in a normal car, more or less.
The thing i liked most about what Wils had to say, is that there will be small team sizes
Vehicles + FPS = boo imo

FFS, if they were fixed path movers, the devs wouldn't be ranting about how good their driving model is. A fixed path mover *doesn't have a driving model*

Anyway if you even glance at any of the previews, it is obvious they are talking about drivable vehicles. For example:
    http://www.shacknews.com/extras/2005/081505_quakewars_1.x

Basically this new tech allows the developers to create a gigantic texture for the game which serves as the battlefield. Designers can set height maps, vegetation, as well as traction. So a big part of the map could be sand, while an asphalt road goes through it. Vehicles will behave differently depending on what they are driving on.

Speaking of vehicles, the game will feature various land and air units. Humans have vehicles such as highly advanced tanks (the game is set about 50 years in the future), while the Strogg forces feature Walkers and other units you've seen in the Quake 4 screenshots and videos. It's important to the designers that you can have fun on foot as well, and they are ensuring that sometimes it's easier to get to an objective by foot than using a vehicle.

Besides the MegaTexture technology, Quake Wars also has improved netcode to allow for more players. A new physics system in place as well. Let's just say you expect to see a lot of Quake Wars stunt videos. Individual wheels can come off, you can rig a vehicle with explosives, you can do donuts, drive a car on its side with two wheels, do barrel rolls in airplanes, etc, etc.

There is a good chance that vehicles in ET:QW will move away from the things we like in in RTCW and ET, but I don't think they are inherently bad. Most of the stuff that is annoying about vehicles in the BF series has to do with how they were made, not just the mere existence of vehicles. The Tribes series did better with them, IMO.
Will the movement, shooting, and gameply be similar to ET?

Ex: Side strafing, 3 headshots for a kill, character classes etc....

Like Quake 4, ET QW will run off a modified Doom 3 engine. The graphics should be smashing!

update your computers for this one if you havent already! whoo, i cant wait for this. im buying whatever the newest ATI card is for this one upon game release.

anyone have any idea how the leagues will be run? 6v6 like W:ET?

i mean, from the way this sounds, this may be similar to full scale war strategy, lol. i have heard that as aliens you can make dead humans into a spawn point. And as humans, you can pick what you build, ie-missile turrets on top of a building as opposed to another gun.

i really do not think that they would turn enemy territory into battlefield 1942. if anything, wolfenstein - enemy territory is still entirely more complicated than most FPSs out there. Even newer ones. The added element of strategy makes it unique. And it does not have the support/player base that CounterStrike does, i think, for that very reason.

so following that, enemy territory being so strategy based as it is, i highly doubt they would take away that aspect of it, even in hand to hand combat. from what i have read, it is still going to require a decent amount of hand to hand combat as well as building, and driving vehicles. i just think theyre going to add some layers of strategy to it, such as different vehicles holding certain materials, possibly different kinds of classes, etc etc...

anyways, its fabulous to see such a great game updated like this. Its about time we had some new graphics for this, and its about time splash damage started charging for this game. it might help to weed out some of the problems W:ET is currently having.

    yaay. cant wait.

I'm remembering what I can from all these interviews I've been reading. Forgive any stupid little mistakes I make.

donald: SplashDamage were targetting for 12v12, but they don't even have the resources to TEST that many people, meaning most games they play are 6v6, and thus will ensure that's fun.

Also, from what I understand, it's NOT going to be like BF2 (attack anywhere from anywhere else). The maps will be OPEN, however, both sides will be focused on one point. The method you take, however, can vary. One mission I remember reading about had the humans escorting a mobile base vehicle, driven by another human to an outpost, setting up a spawn, building a bridge to cross into some sort of city, and eventually taking it over.

Basically, if you really want, you can go all the way out into the terrain, turn around, and flank the enemy. That's the impression I got: you have to go here, but you're not going to be led there.
well the only thing i would wonder about this is that, as complicated of a strategy game as this sounds, 8-12 people might actually make more sense, there being so many layers to it? so they might do it, but they cant test it? i mean, if they actually made it 12 v 12 without it being like a pub server (which, with the added strategy layers, i doubt it would be that way), it would be all-out war, lol.

i agree, sponge...if it were attack anywhere from anywhere else, there'd be no strategy, heh. and strategy is the main component of enemy territory.

et isnt dying btw, i think just alot of the top teams are getting tired of playing...more new blood will come in after some of them leave, imo. move some of the betas up to make room for new teams.

    vehicle backrage ftw, lol.

My prediction is that we'll see something like the BF2 ladders in terms of player size, QW's "sweet spot" being 8 players, however 6 players still very playable and very fun. By not being able to test it, they basically dont have the resources in-house to get 24 people playing it at once, from what I understand.

Again, don't take my word as anymore than a fanboy, I don't have any official link to QW, I'm just regurgitating what I've heard.

There's something to be said about the BF2 style of attack anywhere, anytime, that makes it an absolute turn-on to a military nerd like me, it's the possibility of using "real" tactics rather than ones you would make like in ET.
    hmm.

i will definitely be checking out the bf2 ladders...i dont have bf2 nor have i played it. only 1942.

they should recruit us to test it, lol.

Can I apply for League/ladder admin now? I need to prepare... Read my lips, NO NERFING (unless its 100% necessary).

The game is objective oriented but requires many classes to complete. Therefore, small team sizes will not be seen unless small custom maps are developed. The maps that are being created from the single player levels will require many classes to complete and each class has many new functions that extend from ET. For example, depending on the condition of your fallen teammate, if his heart is stopped you would use your defibulator pads to shock the heart of the victim. The adrenaline needle is no more the quick fix to every ailment. The game has been reported to be more difficult to master in order to keep the interest of the players for a longer time. The result of matches will no longer be a toss up as was with teams like infensus 4kings and dignitas on beach, where it all depended on circumstantial 'luck' of the day. It will take a lot of talent to be able to stay on top of the hall of fame list for this game.
They've already stated that they've been testing the game with 6v6-8v8 in their offices, and that is plenty fun. Nor has anyone said that the defrib pads won't always work, it could be just a needle replacement, nor is it adrenaline in the first place (that's the level 4 upgrade, and gives you unlimited sprint) I'm really not sure where you're getting your info from, but it sure hasn't been confirmed or even mentioned yet
eh, who said anything about defrib pads? where did i miss that one?

think they ll make a 64 bit version?
Nor has anyone said that the defrib pads won't always work, it could be just a needle replacement, nor is it adrenaline in the first place (that's the level 4 upgrade, and gives you unlimited sprint)

er yeah, i didnt say the defrib pads wont always work, nor will always work, either way thats not what my point was. The point was to give a little sum up to people reading to encourage the reception of the game.
Obviously, adrenaline needle was typo, revive needle. happy? gg /chill
"The adrenaline needle is no more the quick fix to every ailment"

What are you trying to say then. Summing it up is fine, however the facts are off on more than one count.
mostly i just meant, i've read almost everything out there and didnt see it, so i thought maybe i missed a story or article or something.

All i want to know is can i run it ok on my computer.geforce 6600 OC, AMD 2800+.How will that run I wil just have to upgrade my card if i cant runi t lol.
Its ID's answer to battlefield 2, and I hope its incredibly successful, because bf2 is getting a little dry
Soooooo...its gonna be Quake 5, with a little team play added in. Cool. GG ET.

Any news on a release date? Gonna have playable demo at E3.
    My prediction?

    One map playable at E3
    One map playable at QCon
Release November 06-- same pattern as Quake4.

    I'm still psyched.
eb games and gamestop have the game listed with a June 1st release date.
Those sites are completly unreliable; SD themselves have said it won't be until late in the year at one point.

I'm judging by the the max players a vehicle holds. My guess is this game will larger team sizes that ET but smaller than BF2. The Badger holds 5 if I read correctly and 5 in the air transport.

It's difficult to say at this point how many players will be in competition, but my guess it will be close to that of BF2.

It would seem kinda odd to play in competition with a 6v6 when you have vehicles that hold 5. I'm thinking more on the lines of maybe being at least 8 players.

At any rate there really isn't enough decent information out there to give a good assumption at this point.
