Season 13 Playoffs

Once again, the regular season is coming to a close (we have two weeks left) so it's time for the playoffs! Each season we get a lot of questions and suggestions so here is the official thread for all playoff related questions and discussions. This thread will be updated with each question asked that has not already made the list.


How many teams make it to playoffs?

How do you decide which team faces which?
For a 8v8 bracket: 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5
For a 6v6 bracket: 1v6, 2v5, 3v4

Higher seeded team is always Home.


How long does playoffs last and what is the schedule?
It usually lasts approx. 4-5 weeks depending on any holidays or scheduling conflicts.

Nov. 16th - Week 1 - de_nuke
Dec. 1st - Week 2 - de_dust2
Dec. 7th - Week 3 - de_train
Dec. 14th - Week 4/Inter-conference Final - BO3


Is my team eligible?
Once the regular weeks are over, qualified teams will advance to the playoffs. Position in the standings is based on total points. If there is a points tie when seeding playoff teams, total rounds-won and then win % will be used to determine the seeding. This is why we require teams to file no-show disputes and to play out all 30 rounds in the event of a tie.


What is BO3?
BO3 stands for "Best of 3." During the finals, the teams will be able to choose the maps that they would like to play. Here is how it will work:

1st Map - Visitor's choice (lower seeded team)
2nd Map - Home's choice (higher seeded team)
3rd Map - Both teams will need to agree

Because this is the first season including BO3, we're going to compromise with all the teams (both for and against) and require that both teams post their map choices in match comms and agree to a third ahead of time.


How do I make up matches??
Post your info or browse through the info of other teams and players in this thread: /forums/showthread.asp?forumid=335&threadid=443862 -- After contacting a team and you both come to agreement in making up the match, you'll need to follow the instructions on that thread on how to set one up. The deadline for all make-up matches is Nov. 12th at 11:59PM Eastern.

Some Playoffs Tips:

You have up until Thursday night 11:59PM each week to either report or reschedule your matches. We will not allow any extensions due to the constricting time-line. Rare exceptions may be made, so it's best to contact an admin if you are looking at playing past the deadline.

If you wish to dispute your match, you MUST do so within 24 hours of the match being played! Since the dispute system does not work for the playoffs, send an email to: missmensies@teamwarfare.com . Please remember to use an appropriate title.

The higher seeded team should always be home. The site doesn't know how to properly determine who is home, so ignore what it says and go by seed. There's no way for us to set who is home.

Please DO NOT report the match right away, unless you are certain your opponents do not intend to dispute. This will save everyone's time and effort because we can communicate faster and more reliably via match comms than email.

How are the maps being decided? Do Team Founder's/Captain's vote? Been curious because there's 1 or 2 maps I'd love to play on.

Not the place for it as it deals with a dispute but tell your captains/founder to check their e-mails.

so i guess I'll take that as a no to my question

So do we have to play it on the dates or is like how it is during the season, we can agree on another day say tuesday instead of Monday?

Aw that sucks. I thought the CS community/Team Founder's/Captain's would be able to submit suggestion's/nominations at least. Too bad. It would be nice to see some new maps from the CS ladders that are used but never used in the League. Thanks for the info though.

You should make the finals BO3 though...

just a suggestion, cause that'd be alot more fun/fair.

Team 1 chooses the first map, team 2 chooses the 2nd map, and then each team chooses maps they DONT want to play until there's only 1 map left, which would be the 3rd map.

I agree. That would be way more fun & fair. Sometimes you just have an off night. Or one team may fare better on another map than you do. BO3 (Thanks missmensies for telling me what it is!) I think would be better. I'm not sure how well team's choosing maps they " don't want" would work though? Well either that or a mutually agreed upon map (pick a few maps and see if you have a common choice). Either way BO3 ftw!

The way I see it is that, let's say, Team 1 is really good at inferno, that's the map they'll pick, and Team 2 is really good at nuke, they'll pick nuke. Now say Team 1 blows at contra, if that was the 3rd map that'd be lame, so they choose it first as the map they don't want. Team 2 would do the same with their worst map as well, then team 1 chooses their 2nd worst map, etc, until 1 map is left that both teams didn't choose cause they aren't bad at it but they aren't great at it either, or else they would have chose it as their map choice.

tl;dr it's more fair, sup?

I really hope you guys take into consideration of this. It's something very fair and fun. Map 3 however you don't pick based on who hates, the admins would decide on that map after the first 2 are chosen.
Team with the most points/highest rank usually they have home for the first and 3rd map meaning they pick the first one. other team picks the 2nd one and is home while 3rd admins pick while highest team is home.

Deciding who the winner of a league based on one match isn't right. The finals isn't until dec 14th so there's a lot of time to decide and make this happen which I really hope you guys do start up this year!

Why would an admin choose the map?

My system is better. Process of elimination. Sup?

Edit: I also didn't understand what being the home team has anything to do with it. Please enlighten me.

I like and respect the TWL admins and all, but no. Sorry.

Unless you're implying that a random map is selected by an admin, in which case still, no.

Ah that's way more clear to me now *Sorry I'm sick at the moment can't think straight*. I think that's a great idea, so long as team's post their "list" all at once. I think it's lame as well letting TWL Admin's pick maps (I love you guys though!) because I hate being forced to play maps my team utterly suck at. When we are good at other maps that are not played at all. It's just as you said...it's unfair for someone who isn't playing to pick the map, because for 1 team it could be their best map, and the team their up against their worst map.

Pretty similar to my idea, in which both teams sumbit a few maps they like , and see if there's a mutual map that matches up and play that for the 3rd. But your's is a bite more to the point. I like it =].

I think he means...in letting admin's pick the 3rd map it's Okay because...well I'm not too sure actually, lol. Server choice maybe he meant? Yes, the finals are not till dec 14th and we have almost 2 weeks till Play Off's. I think we should be able to vote for BO3 (in the finals I think it was?) and Play Off map rotation nominations.

heres my suggestion

make robotrippin/consistently off play for 4th spot.

then Unix vs. #4 (possibly BO3)

Xplciit vs. GC (possibly BO3)


finals BO3

start next week or the week after, no point in waiting around

EDIT: And as dell said bo3 has to be all in one night, higher seed picks first map and last map

yea most of the time bo3 is for that one night and it would start say 8cst on a day each team agrees

To give a little wiggle room just do it in 2 nights back to back. So if you can't make one night you can at least do the next. Monday/Tuesday. 2 maps Mon, 1 Tues. Or all 3 in Monday if your team can.

Oh and...Let Team Founder's who's teams are playing the Play Off's NOMINATED Maps for the Play Off's in Leader Ship forum!!! We still have 10 days or so till Play Off's! =]

Question! How is it decided which teams play which teams in the Play Off's? It's not #1 vs # 8, #2 vs #7, etc, to just knock out the lower teams first is it? Seems a tad unfair, even if some-what reasonable...should be random, at least that would be my hope. (lol were the lowest team in Central advancing to Play Off's so, this Q is important for us =] ).

Another Q, how many team's from the Play Off's make it to the semi-finals? 4 from each bracket? Curious as I'm hoping we can at least make it to the semi-finals. Would be nice =).

if its a best of three you CANNOT make it over 2 nights, as it destroys any momentum that a team may have picked up on the 2nd map.

Not wuite sure what your second paragraph adresses, but if its map choices then there are really only a few maps to choose from. my reccomendations for maps are as follows.

1st round = inferno
2nd round = de_cpl_mill
conference finals = season
Open fianls BO3 Nuke/Train/D2

Clearly its going to be just like any other league (professinal sport or amateur sport or a video game, its all the same) 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5...sorry it sucks but its the way it should be

And its single elimination, so you do the math

Actually I have a better idea for main playoffs, make it double elim with all 5 teams involved, finals played as a BO3 where it can either be a best 2 out of 3, or make it tournament style where lower bracket needs to win 2 whereas upper bracket only needs 1 win

Yea you never make it 2 nights. 1 night for a BO3.

8 teams make it, yes it's 1v8, 4v5, 3v6 2v7 that's how EVERY bracket is set up and it will be in this case. And then the winners of each move on so if the top seeds won they'd go like this...1v4, 2v3 and then the finals. So yes you will be playing us first round.

the only reason i say mill is because it is way better than d2, and is a classic map, but maybe contra would be a better choice... personally i would prefer tuscan. but its a different map.

And the only flaw i see in your theory of how to decide mpas is how the fuck do you prepare for it? are you suggesting you do it the week before then?

And i was talking about main playoffs, which are none of your concern

Nuke & Dust 2, Cbble are fine, but lets NOT use Inferno...I hate that map it's just so cramped. inferno_pro should be used. It's a much better map, and it's used in the ladders.

I still think we should take the next few days in Leader Ship forums for all Team Founder's team's who made it to the Play Off's and let them nominate the maps, maps with the most are the maps that are used. Get it done in 3 days and people would still have a week to practice. And top 6 maps nominated the TWL Admin's choose from. (Though I'd much prefer we'd just take 2 days to nominate, and 2 days to vote on top 5-6 nominated maps). Let the teams that are playing have a VOICE in the maps they have to play.

And I see what you guys mean in having BO3 spread over 2 days being a bad idea. Though having it on one could have complications. I think you should try and get it done in 1 day, but that might not be feasible for every team, was all I was suggesting. But BO3 in 1 day is a better idea, you are correct there.

there is no way in hell that cbble is going to be in playoffs, although it would be pretty jokes if it was. And inferno destroys d2 as a map, if is one of the best maps out there are source inferno is better than 1.6 inferno imo, because angles are tighter and it just has a better feel to it. Inferno should most definitely be in there as it is definitely up there with nuke/train as far as difficulty of gameplay goes

I'm sry that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Use cbble and not inferno??? Inferno is one of the maps you see in most leagues one of the final maps in playoffs and it's stupid not to use it

you don't prepare for it. you prepare for the map you'll choose. if you've made it to playoffs than i can assume you're somewhat of a team. even if you're just pugging it, you've played each map before, you know spots and generally know how to play each map. you shouldn't need to go over strats, dry run them, and scrim for all 3 maps.

what im saying is any half decent team should know how to play each map, there's no preparation required.

We aren't a half a decent team. We pug most of our matches. Sometimes its quite comical, you should hear the confusion in vent once the LO3 is exec'd. Sometimes we end up playing 3 banana and 2 apps.... i think somehow that worked too....

if the team is serious they'll have strats and shit for every map

if you're pugging it you won't have strats regardless of if you knew all 3 maps to be played

also missmensies used the word "peoples" instead of times and forgot the word tell.

We've already decided a rotation for the playoffs this season. The BO3 format is a good idea and being that it has to be back-to-back is even better, I wasn't aware of that. So, with that being said, I don't have a problem going along with it.
