This may have been covered, but why the hell does it take like 5 minutes for me to get into a server?
I have a XP1800 and 256MB DDR 2700. I just dont get it, cuz Tribes 2, I am in in like a minute or less...

HELP if you can, thanks.

This is one hairy assed and angry beaver!!
more ram. 256 is just not enough. 512 minimum.

Slow hard drive and low amount of memory. 512 of memory, and 7200 rpm hd will cut down on load times immensely..
512MB of memory will improve your load time dramatically.....

MY god how ridiculous, 512MB minimum to play this game...jesus....okay, THANKS GUYS. muchly appreciated.

I bet it dont say 512 on the box does it LOL.

I started running off the cd image using the cd daemon tools described in another thread and that helped a lot with the load up times.
LINKY? or can u email me with a description of what u did.
Thanks

Well there are a couple reasons.

1. You do need more RAM (768 is actually optimum)
2. Turn your textures down if you have them maxed its takes longer to load the maps.

That should sort out some of your issues.

goto CRUCIAL.COM they have some really nice rates on ram and can even ensure the ram you wants is compatable prior to the sale...also fast shipping and money back if not happy for any reason
The texture quality and amount of ram have little to do with load times, it's the speed of the drive the data is being accessed off of which makes the most difference. (the HD)

I bet your HD speed isn't 7200, which explains the long loading times.. Any "fix" you do which doesn't involves getting a faster HD will only affect your load times very slightly. The RAM and texture quality affects the quality of play as far as detail you can use, your HD's speed effect's your load time inbetween maps..

So in other words. Turn down your texture settings and things will speed up. I have a 7200rpm drive and if I crank my settings to max I see a pretty big increase in load times between maps over running medium textures.

Also loading textures into memory does have an effect on load times. If you have more memory the game is not writing to "virtual memory" which is a 1000 times slower then regular memory.

You may test this if you wish CM. I have.

If there was a search for these forums I could find it butt there isnt. The proggy is called "cd-daemon" its from http://www.daemon-tools.com but there website is down. The current build is daemon332.exe. Search for it via google or something to find it.

To create the ISO for bf1942 from my CD, I am using undisker http://www.undisker.com. There is a 30 day trial version available. There are other ISO from CD tools but undisker was the best one I found. Another one is called Alcohol 120%, but I havent tried it.

Once you create the ISO, you use cd-dameon to mount the ISO as a cd drive.
Ya, but you are talking a few seconds difference, he was talking a minute to load. After a minute between map changes, I already have 2 kills

I checked into what you were saying, takes me 26 seconds on my normal settings (medium basically) took me 31 seconds on high textures and high sound. 5 minutes=old and slow HD. (even assuming that was an exaggeration and its only around a minute)
True. (But I kind of figured he exagerated a touch)

Also just running bf1942 took up 254 megs of memory in Windows 2000. Thats just 1942 add 115 for windows and you are now using your HDD as memory causing all sorts of slow downs. That was on a server playing Kharkov.

ick

Here is an updated link to the daemon tools

http://www.cd-rw.org/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/daemon_tools.cfm
We have a guy with us who used to have a super-slow hard drive. (according to his wife) He took minutes to load at map change. It took him almost 3 minutes to load. It was horrible, he was "to slow on the load" for computer games, and to "fast on the load" for other things...

/me thanks god he isnt around right now to read this..
HAHA

I just got that daemon thing set up..have to test it out later on.

daemon tools is so nice. don't need to worry about cd's and dogs eating them and shit. only draw back is the HD space they img files take up. But it is worth it IMO

which btw!!!!
some games may not work if you don't install from your img's that you use. you can either reinstall using the VCD's or just change the registry i believe. i usually do a reinstall.

Well thanks, Im gonna put in a stick of 512MB that will bring me up to 768MB DDR 2700. See how this works.

If you have a slow HD dude, it wont matter how much RAM you add in reality. While yes, you might get a sleight increase in your load times, the bottleneck will still be how fast the data gets transferred from your HD to your RAM. A 5200rpm HD with 1 gig of ram will not load the map as quickly as a 7200 with 378 mb's of ram.
Well I was kind of paying attention last night and it takes anywhere from 60 secs to a little more for me to join a map.

Now, can anybody explain why BF seems to just like "own" my computer, like esc and ctrl+alt+del, it seems to prevent me from doing that, or slow it down so far that it is annoying...
It eats a ton of RAM. BF is a game it really does pay off to turn off uneeded background programs, and 512mb of RAM is pretty much standard fare..
Man, I just dont understand how they can program like that, I play tribes...and its just so much less chunky.

I wish I knew what all to turn off LOL. If I did a screen shot would anybody know what I can and can turn off just by looking at it? Im not a noob computer wise by any means, but wtf all these programs running and what they are doing I have no clue.

Where did you get 512 for $40? If you go to Crucial's site it's at least double that right now.
crucial does own, i saw a 512 stick for like 60 a few weeks ago. i havent been to the site in a bit, havent needed any more memory since i got 2 512 sticks just wait a week or 2 and it should go down in price, especially when ddr 2 gets more popular this fall.

JUST BUMPING, cuz Im curious, thanks.
Look at any of the general tweak guides for optimizing your OS. Like here is one for bf1942, http://www.tweaktown.com/document.php?dType=guide&dId=420&dPage=1.

You can find OS tweak guides elsewhere on that site, http://www.tweaktown.com/document.php?dType=guide.

It is plenty, if you want to run everything on the lowest settings possible. Then of course, its almost impossible to tell friend from foe by glancing at skins..
I got a GeFORCE 5200fx video card. all my setting run on high. Nothing but flawless gameplay and map loads in less than a 1min and a half.

and how much memory is on that card?
128mb on the card itself. But, My point being 256 on the motherboard itself.

Yes...BUT 1942 first loads textures into video memory. Once it runs out of vid memory it starts using regular memory. So if you have a 128 meg Vid card it will use less reg memory since more is stored on the card.

Thats why you are not having issues running with only 256. I have a 64 meg card. 1942 uses 235 Megs of memory while playing a map. So having only 256 would be unacceptable for me seeing windows uses 120megs itself I would take a pretty big performance hit.

That help?
