I think this league/ladder would be fun if we had a way to make it where all the teams were balanced to a degree.
Get 8 people to be captains and then give them players to make a team but make it where they'd play with some friends and some new people and balance the talent.
Mix up the matches to be 5v5 inf, 8v8 conquest, 8v8 ctf, 3v3 air, 5v5 tank, 4v4 boat or something along those lines.
It'd randomly change so some teams would have an advantage over the other ones if you didn't get really good players for some areas. After a season or certain period of time you'd make new teams and weed out people who aren't playing or showing up for matches and add new people who want to join it.
Sounds interesting but a bit complicated. I'd figure you're sugguesting mixing up the teams because the Dinos might get bored raping everyone, but I know our team wouldnt really want to get broken up so there might be a conflict of interest. I'd like to see maybe a ladder because its more flexible with schedules. If you could orchestrate it I dont care really, I'm up for anything.

How did you know you liked playing with eachother until after you tried it? It'd be a bit of a stretch for everyone to play with new people but it'd make the competition alot more fun and even for everyone.
I'm just trying to help make it fun for everyone who would like to compete and have a fair chance at it.
I guess before we do anything we'd need to find out the numbers if we could make something or do another season before we get into other details. Can Clay do a poll thing?
Like I said I'm up for anything, but speaking on behalf of syr, we were happy with the team we put together and wanted to expand on what we felt was a success. I like your idea though, and i hope we can make the stretch.
But if we choose 8 captains and have them pick players, I would think who ever from syr that might be chosen as captain would just repick syr people. So that would work out for us, but I'm sure is not what you are intending to happen.
We then will collectively make even teams where it will likely be:
Tankers not on same team: Thomas, Malakai, Roo, etc.
Pilots not on same team: Snake, Ddub, Pockets, Dirty Speirs, Karamazov, Cyak, etc.
Infantry not on same team: Tony, Jeremy, DocD, Cream, etc.
If there are more than eight then basically if one team is stacked in infantry they will lack in tanking or planes etc.
A group of people may play all on the same team if the talent is stacked evenly among all teams.
You'll probably be playing with at least 2-3 guys you play with now for 42 but it'll also build rapport with players to build a stronger community of what is left.
Neat thing with this is that you'll be able to play different matches to keep things interesting but will also allow you to beat certain teams that might not favor well on map selected.
There'd also be a ringer group of extras who is around alot who would fill in for matches if teams are short. That way teams would always be able to play and have competitive matches.
We all like to mix things up and the key to keeping this alive is not making it boring or to drag things out.
I'll keep this on ice though until we hear from more about it from everyone.
im down for whatever we decide on. this has been fun. i think we have the whole holiday season to get something lined up. maybe we could plan on doing something around the middle of january?

On the flip side, I know a lot of teams would probably want to play together.. so it's a double edged sword.
I love the draft leagues... the ONLY problem with them is that they tend to fall apart after a week or so (that's what happened with the past couple of seasons of NBFL).
I'm down for anything though - draft league, normal league, etc. I'm not sure who all in RSG is willing to continue to play '42 (I think Holden was planning on stopping after this tourney), but I'm sure at least a few of us would be willing to play.

then again, holden planned on stopping about 2 years ago.
I hate the draft idea. I think at this point teams want to play together. Good or bad ( Rev, Rsg ). I like the league idea though. A short league. A little interest is back like Ginger said. I know I'd rather game with the same group of assholes over the chance of having cream.or grassy on my team. Imo

Ditto.
The draft idea sounds good however if it has failed consecutively in the past would it be worth it to try it again? I'm sure peeps will have no desire to show if they are put on a team where they dont want to be.
Ladders are cool. I actually really like that idea. 8v8 conq, 5v5 inf, 2v2 tank/plane
Allows for plenty of matches as it is continuous. Also, it gives teams a little bit of flexibility in terms of when they play the match.
It could also help teams get some good match experience without the possibility of elimination... which is always a good thing. Post edited by Dirty Speirs at 11/22/2010 8:09:22 PM
I think the draft is great. Just playing devil's advocate here, but in the past, there has always been trouble with teams that start to lose, start to lose players.
Also. I fully agree with keeping the tankers and pilots and infantry on different teams, to level out the skill. But, If you have the "top pilot" then they should get the "4th best tanker" we would have to figure out a way to not get the best pilot/tanker/infantry on the same team. I know its hard to say who is better than who. But I think we have the foundation to really make something work here, with the community still on board with playing.
Appalachian State > Michigan. Anything can happen. Let the teams who enjoy playing together continue. That's the thing. Just work harder on strats, teamwork, or hacks in my case to win. Work together to get that teamwork meshed well. IMO
hold new tournament and have new tourney champs play dino's?
meanwhile dino's setup play-dates with new tournament's teams?
But, how in the world is this actually going to work when teams didn't(couldn't?) even want to play for third place?
Is there just not that much interest in at least playing a game where boff teams play harr and had fun, even if for third place?

I don't see us just waiting while everyone else plays matches.
My only problem with drafting is that it has failed all 3 times. We didn't even play the finals match last time.
The benefit of a universal match night is that it encourages teams to play weekly. Establishing a game time, while not flexible, keeps teams active and players aware. Once we start rescheduling and playing different nights people become unfocused and stop showing up. In other words, I don't like the ladder idea. I think it fails again.
I would rather do a two division (4 teams per division) round robin. Winner of each division plays for the championship.

agreed, but have the top four teams make the playoffs instead, no BCS bullshit
Lol. Teams want to play. Just not once and done if you play Goliath. That's why a short league would be fun. Vanilla maps of course. Keep it simple. Idiot creamzor made us use bfpro and even he didn't show up match 1. Keep it to one day, such as Sundays. Let the teams play together though, no draft. syr had every intention of playing a third place match. i just dont think atf was interested in playing...
Well first of all I dont see how 2v2 tank ladder wouldnt work. Its small and simple, all you need is a friend, and it makes plenty of teams. 2v2 air would also work just as well. I think reguardless of what we end up deciding to do, we should still do these on the side. 5v5 infantry is a stetch seeing as you need 4 or more friends for a team and scheduling would be difficult on top of a draft/league/what ever, so lets not worry about 5v5 unless theres a huge demand. But 2v2 ladders should definately be a base to keep things alive because they need the least amount of effort to be successful.
Onto to the draft, I can see how teams and players can start to drop off after a while, and its a good chance it will end up like the last few times. We do know however that keeping clans together works. So why dont we do clans again, but try to fix out the bugs we encountered this last tourney. I agree with roundrobin. We know this time around we'll have a team or two more so that will help. And maybe make things more fun for ATF, MG, 5thMR, and the newer clans. Not trying to be a dick or anything by singling them out, but I think ATF wasnt really game for 3rd place match because they might not of felt commpetitive enough. They need matches they can look forward to having fun playing, rather than getting railed by Dinos or RSG.
So hypethetically speaking, if we had a round robin of 2 divisions like this, and had semi finals and finals, I think we could satisfy everyone participating.
Div1
Dinos, RSG, Rev, Syr
Div2
ATF, MG, 5thMR, DA
And semi finals would be Div1 1st vs Div2 2nd, Div 2nd vs Div 1st, or something of the sort Post edited by tehnilla at 11/23/2010 2:18:46 AM
what do you guys think of a 3v3 infantry ladder on the side? as much as id like to do a 5v5 ladder i think 3v3 would be more realistic and just as fun.

Ok lets face it here Shorty between Dinos and RSG we had some very good players both teams can play well together. (you guys soundly beat us not shying away from that). But the problem is most of the teams out there now are either pubbers that come together to compete or are not as experinced as our teams in competition.
The other facter is who is gunna work on teamwork and strats in this game? I know alot of teams aren't. I've never agreed with a draft league but what your asking teams todo is just not gunna happen. Dino's will still have all there roster and teams just wont wanna play you.
Now I know theres some smart comment comming but meh, I'm just stating a fact.

A true fact.
Dinos and RSG had the majority of the talent before it even started, and even if all teams had shown the end result would have been the same.
The only people that would want to play in this scenario again are players from Dinos or RSG, or people who plan on joining them this time around.
A draft would be the only option to solve this. Unfortunately, this creates a whiny bitch syndrome for certain players if they don't play with other certain players, and then people no show.
It's the same with the ladders Grassy is talking about. If Dinos take their team to that ladder how long do you think other teams, filled with mostly Moongamer pubbers or old school part timers, gets sick of getting raped in matches. My guess is 1 match is all it would take.
It's great that people are still interested in continuing '42 competitively in some fashion, but the discussion has to be realistic to actually succeed.
