Back to Battlefield 1942

A potential project

well a while back I looked into remaking 42 on the bf2 engine. As some of you might know, I contributed a bit to bfpro and also made a 5v5 competition mod, I've sort of dabbed in modeling skinning, and all that good stuff. But it turned out that project was just overwelming. I would need help.

Since then I've looked into remaking it on the HL2 engine (which i like better, and seems to be easier to mod also). I've enlisted a few locals who are currently taking maya and photoshop classes, and I'm beginning to toy around with maps etc. The way I see it, bf42 is built on a crappy engine that couldn't handle punkbuster, the ping and other consistencies heavily effect play. With a good update of graphics and a solid engine, hopefully it will be more attractive to new and old players alike.

I plan to start with an open beta on a map remade such as berlin, maybe just infantry only at first. and build from the ground. The objective short term is just to get a community around the game, I will admit I do entertain ideas that it could be lucrative also in the future, but who should begrudge a little compensation for the time.

anyway i just wanted to throw this out, and see what type of support/reaction/ideas come out.
hey, interesting idea...I think it would be cool to see how far you can get with it. I like the idea of using the hl2 engine; I haven't played it much, but I've heard from other modders that its a lot more capable than the bf1942 engine.

I've heard some BFV modders are planning on releasing their own patch, calling it BFV 2.0. Between them they control almost all of the top 10 vietnam servers, so it would provide some motivation for players to install the patch :0

I guess it all depends on what you're trying to accomplish. What's the reason for wanting to remake 42? If its to fix what you thought were flaws, or make it better...cool. It would have to be damn near perfect though, or it might just turn into another small obscure minimod lost on the interwebs.

anything under 50 ping i played at the same level, so w.e. people have always used that as a way to discredit my play. somehow this horrid bf42 player went cal-invite and cevo professional in a much more competitive game...counterstrike source -_-

just an idea but check out the forgotten hope mode for BF2, they may already have the assets you need to build bf42 on bf2..

Water, how could this be done? I mean how could you remake it? I'd like an explanation. :]

eww bf2 engine, was fun for a bit. But FH2...they spent 3 years modding a game on a shitty engine. GG

like i said, i don't plan to remake it on the bf2 engine. the way this works is I use the basic hl2/source engine and rework the models skins and physics giving it a bit of a graphics lift while hopefully maintaining near identical teamplay. I'm not sure how close the gameplay should be though, I want to fix problems EA never addressed, such as nadespamming, I'm thinking of just taking a bit of the power out of grenades, or doing away with ammo boxes and starting with like 10 magazines.

I am actually getting this on the road, and though inspired by bf42 it will be a different game with a different name. I don't want to get into the whole copyright stuff with ea or anything of the such if it looks like it may make some profit.

To begin with you will probably have to have HL2/CSS to run the game. Most avid gamers already have it, but it's like 20 bucks at this point, so it hopefully wont be a big holdup.

I hope to release some sort of beta in a few monthes, when I actually get a team together and we can gauge how quickly it will come along with semi-professional looking stuff I'll set an actual date. I would like everyone to garner up as much support as possible, I mean this is best case scenario, when this is developed, unlike every huge game maker I am from the community, this will be 100% tuned for competitive play. I won't leave bugs unfixed for monthes on end.

Sort out a league first

dannnnnng
I can only do what the power of an active community allows me.

Battlefield 1942: 2v2 Tank
Active Teams: 6
Available Teams: 8
Resting Teams: 0
Total Teams: 14
Percent Active: 42.86%

Battlefield 1942: 3v3 Infantry
Active Teams: 2
Available Teams: 7
Resting Teams: 0
Total Teams: 9
Percent Active: 22.22%

Battlefield 1942: 5v5 Infantry
Active Teams: 4
Available Teams: 5
Resting Teams: 0
Total Teams: 9
Percent Active: 44.44%

Battlefield 1942: 8v8 Conquest
Active Teams: 2
Available Teams: 3
Resting Teams: 0
Total Teams: 5
Percent Active: 40.00%

Some of the percents are very misleading, for example, 2 out of 5 teams = 40%.

Nah bf1942 is like one of those quarters that you have tied to a string and you keep getting credits with just one quarter!

Then you just make a new one, oops EA did that with Vietnam, BF2, and BF2142 but failed because Vietnam was only a penny, BF2 was a dime, and 2142 was a nickle!
