Y'know...reading the mod details on this patch brought an old issue back to mind.

Why the hell don't they limit the availability of parachutes to those people who fly airplanes? I mean, it's not like the guy who runs off the landing craft with a BAR in his mitt is gonna be toting around a parachute. Better yet, they ought to add an entirely new class of player: PILOT.

PILOT would be armed much like the pilot in RvS (Raven Shield) is armed: sidearm, knife, a few grenades...and that's it. No more of this bullshit of some smacktard grabbing a fookin' plane, flying it over to the other guy's carrier and jumping out with a freakin' bazooka or assault rifle (as if you could fit that into the cockpit of a fighter).

It'd cut down on dumb shits using fighters and bombers as personal taxi services, that's for damned sure. Of course, anyone other than the pilot could be appropriately armed...but that would mean that for a smacktard to bail out over yer position with a real wep...he'd have to have a pilot buddy agree to take him there.

So far, I think I have yet to see a smacktard with a friend...they're all pretty much loner losers.

The very existence of flame throwers proves that sometime, somewhere, someone said, "You know, I wanna set those people over there on fire. But I'm just not close enough to get the job done".
Baron of Bitchin'

You're on to something, but going about it all wrong, at least I think

The game needs a flying APC. A C-47 would work nicely (and the Junkers equiv. for the Germans). You could drop an assload of people behind the enemy, but it would make a FAT target for flak or fighters A risky venture, and wouldn't tip the gameplay balance TOO much, I think.

Hey, a C-47 or a Fokker TriMotor troop transport is fine by me.

I just hate like hell to see assclowns grab a single seat fighter, take off, pass numerous air targets by without a thought of engaging and then dump the plane so they can bail out over the other guy with their bazooka or assault rifle or whatever. I don't care they end up at the other guys spot with those weps...it just burns me when they take a useful and valuable wep like a plane...and waste it.

Perhaps they don't make a PILOT class but rather, when you jump into a plane, you gain a chute and lose yer main wep. That'd fix it I think.

Actually EURORANGER, I think your original idea about a Pilot class is superb. I highly recommend you get that on the planetbattelfield boards.

{BK}NYPD
i've said since the demo's there needs to be a pilot class. .45 only for ya. it would keep joe noob from plane camping. then again you'd probably just see 6 guys w/pistols holding their cak's as a tank rolled in, but that would get them to change their n00b ways (maybe) too

I guess they won't make "Today" or "soon". In my mind soon would have been the end of the week and that is today.
they meant Next week
On Topic:
WOOOT, I can start playing again.
Off Topic:
Damn good idea with the pilot class/loosing weapon in pilot seat. I mean they already do it for the tank driver (engineer).

If I end up making that post again next friday, I may just burn my BF1942 CD and sell my soul to a MMORPG.

Insofar as the pilot class goes I was reminded that that would mean that someone NOT a pilot couldn't take a plane...and that's kind of contrary to the premise of the game (being able to use all the stuff as you encounter it).

So I thought perhaps the best way to address the whole plane camper/personal taxi crap would be to allow anyone to take a plane but that they'd lose everything aside from their pistol, knife and grenades (if they had them) and gain a parachute.

However, my hardass attitude also suggests that if you're in the water and forced to swim for it that when you reach a boat or shore that it seems kind of ridiculous to whip out a 27 pound assault rifle or bazooka or whatever. Tell me anyone can swim with that much weight on their ass. Not likely.

But I'd settle for some game amendment that cuts down on tards doing little for the pub team aside from camping the plane spawns and shooting one another when a plane appears.

May you could be any class and still get in an plane. But, you would have no nades,no ammo,(except for pistol),no land mines,no explode pack, etc. until you visit an ammo box. There is no way anyone would let you in the cockpit of an aircraft with nades and landmines...thats dumb
Taxi service in matches is a good tactic. I dunno if i'd want it out.

there is a point to having an actual Pilot class. It would prevent those plane thieving assaults. Give the pilot a set of duel .45 pistols or something as a weapon. and the extra thing they get is the parachute.

I actually like that.

As it is a guy cn wreck havoc from the air then once hes damaged can parachute behind enemy lines and cause tons more. Not really a balanced class imho.

This also eliminates snipers from grabbing a plane and parachuting to a rooftop or some other out of the way area of a map that would hard to get to.

I agree with having a pilot class in which they can only use the planes. However, on their weapons I think they should be able to have grenades and just have a pistol and knife. If you ever have to bail then just pick up somebodies pack and tada ur ready to do some damage. As for escorting troops the 2 seater does that anyways. You should allow any class to be able to sit in the gunner of a 2 seater.

I think the community would agree strongly on this, perhaps make a petition or something and present it to EA.
A good tactic, but not very realistic.

I know, I know...BF1942 is about fast action, not realism...but come on! No pilot ever left a plane and then kept waging war behind enemy lines. Bailing out often resulted in injury anyhow.

Hiding in the woods, wounded, with a pistol is one thing...dropping behind lines with full health and a rifle is another.

I really like the idea of losing your main weapon if you hop in a plane. I like _my_ idea of a C-47 and Fokker tri-plane better. Imagine being curled up behind your flag with a StG44, and seeing the C-47 fly overhead, disgorging 10 heavily armed troops. Shit your pants time, LOL!

It isn't a HUGE problem, though...(like a wall hack...THAT'S a problem). It's just something that can be fixed for the sake of realism, but the game won't really suffer if EA does nothing.

Wasn't paratroopers a real thing in WW2? That is the only reason I don't mind any class being able to pilot a plane.

I think that ANYONE should be able to sit in the passenger seats for the plane, those guys can be real paratroopers...

You should only get a parachute if you have been in a plane though. I hate seeing guys jump off of bridges or whatever and suddenly pulling out a parachute for a safe 5 meter jump.

If I were to redesign a pilot system, I would say anyone should be able to steal a plane but they wouldn't have the parachute. Only pilots come prepared. That way snipers or assaults die when their stolen plane dies. Giving the pilot dual pistols is not a bad idea, once they are behind enemy lines they have a chance to steal someone else's weapons.

This should be a secondary issue to getting a fix out to this wallhack and AA dogfuck that came with 1.3.

oh yeah, it has been a week since my last post in this thread. I am getting seriously pissed at the incompetence being shown by the Devs. They haven't even thrown us a bone and said "We are almost there, just another day"...

I kinda agree with Wolven but as I remember from my history, usually the paratroopers werent piloting the plane and jumping out to let it crash as a standard procedure

IMO if someone wants to pilot they should have to take a pilot class character which limits their weapons, after all if you want to lay mines you dont get to carry a BAR, if you want to shoot zooka guns you dont get to carry a STG44. It will go along way towards stopping the smacktards from plane camping and TKing ohters if they are standing there with a pistol and a knife, isnt that what pilots had for waepons in real life?
I still don't see how making a pilot class will keep people from camping the runway for planes. They will simply do it as the pilot class.

Yes, it may stop people from using the planes as a personal taxi, but as Polaris said that is a good tactic used in matches.

Darwin's theories also apply to the digital world.

From tonight, via EA site:

2/14/03

Welcome back from your tour of duty Soldiers!

In this weeks update we're going to talk about some fixes we're working on for the upcoming 1.31 patch. While we don't have a release date for this yet, we do know what we're focusing on. Naturally, with all updates of this nature, none of these are set in stone and could change by the time the patch is released. So without further adieu, here's what we're working on for 1.31.

Wall Hacking
Parachuting Into Objects
Single Player and Co-Op Crashes
Stand Alone Server Error
Text display on-screen time

Keep in mind, we're aware of the other issues reported by our troops in the field and are working to resolve those in another upcoming patch. This patch will be coming sooner than you think!

This is good news
