Server cfg proposal.

I was wondering if twl could update the old rate from 20000-30000 to 40000-50000. The max you can set it to is 100000. For a private server it should not cause much of a bandwidth increase, but it should help with better reg and a more solid connection to the server. Also, setting the rate to 30000 is for more of a lan config than an online config.
I concur.
so 30k is a lan config and you want to update the rate to 50k for internet play.....

what part of that makes sense to you? You do realize that on a normal lan connection at say a lan party, you'd have 100-1000mbps uplink. At home, playing on a dedicated server, you have MAYBE a 50mbps uplink.... and you could be playing against players that have only a 1mbps connection.

Again, what part of your argument made sense in your head before you typed it?

Note: I personally have a 6mb dsl connection with a 1mb upload which puts me at the 1mb notch. Even really good FiOS is likely to put you at only 20-25mb up. Again, on lan you'd have 100mb at the very least with most lans running 1gbps now

The suggestion has been noted and we will look at it.

We currently have it setup so it can allow people from Europe and people on dial-up to play CS:S competitively here at TWL. People playing in Europe, no matter how fast your internet, takes a lot of time to reach servers here in North America.

These are all things that we factor in when writing configurations.
First of all "bucko," its 50KBs not 50mbps; get your facts right before posting. If you want to check, while in game type rate in console. Also lans use a lower data rate because you are in fact sitting next to the person, thus you do not need a higher data rate to compensate for the distance. When I was playing with people in England they were asking for the 100,000 rate, just an fyi.

Also, Night Stalker, are there currently any European players that have a dial up connection? If so I have never played against them.
I didn't actually say that a rate of 50k was in any way related to 50mbps, I was referring to your max available connection speed in a residential zone. My statements only addressed your direct argument that the rate should be higher for internet play than for lan play, which makes no sense at all.

I would also address why increasing it to 50k is a bad move altogether, but I walked away from CSS a while ago and just don't have the patience to debate it with you at this time.

Also, my name's not Bucko, if you'd like to give it another guess, there may be an e-cookie in it for ya.
kind of odd to even see this. only person that supports it is on his team... exploit?
exploit: no,
advantage: yes and no

if they have total shit upload speeds and set the data rate high, then they couldn't possibly send the necessary data to the opponents (or teammates) which would create an odd issue where you see people behind where they are. alternatively, if they had very fast connections and the other team did not, they would have a slight advantage in first impact bullet scenarios.

it's a double edged blade any time there is an imbalance in network connectivity across all players in a particular server and it doesn't effect any one person.

some people that like to think of themselves as "pro" especially in css, will often say that 100k rate is awesome, but this stems from the fact that they have pubbed with a 100k rate where the pubbers were using 30k, creating an imbalance and granting a small advantage to "mr oh so pro", so they think it's the best shit since sliced bread and go about raving about it. What they don't know is that they also negatively effected other users on the server with a reduced cmd rate (if you don't believe me, you can watch this happen in your netgraph).

anyway, just my 2 cents... what the hell do I know?
/end sarcasm

I think you nailed it on the head right there to be honest. Why do you think a lot of players use cfgs to increase their performance in certain respects? It's all about gaining more of an advantage, as long as it is not an unfair one. The higher rate is simply utilizing a faster connection speed. I see nothing wrong with that.

And awpt1x, please drop the conspiracies. You know very well that hardly anyone regularly uses these forums. The fact that I am the only one who supports it on this thread is not indicative of how other players feel.
Yes, it utilizes a faster connection. Again, if not everyone has that high of a connection (upload speed is in question here, not that you can download at 20mb/s) it will create an imbalance which will effect all players in both a negative as well as a positive way as previously mentioned.

Anyway, doesn't effect me anymore, just being the voice of reason in juxtaposition to the bandwagon.
What bandwagon?

You're certainly not the first to want to increase the rates.

There's a long running general consensus that bigger number = better. Whether or not that applies specifically to any individual posting on this thread is beside the point, it's a general thinking out there. You see it in pubs, you see it with people swooping to buy any phone labeled "4G" even when they don't fall into that classification.

It's a product of deceptive marketing practices, we've been trained in general to think bigger = better. Again, that may not apply to anyone posting here, but it sure as hell applies to many people READING here, and I can assure you there is definitely a "increase the rates" bandwagon.
Actually Uping the rate would help anyone with Broadband internet, it would infact make it harder for anyone with Dial-Up to play, But come on Its 2011 if you're still running Dial-Up you don't need to be playing games online unless the game that you're playing was created back when Dial-up was the only thing around in which case the game would be optimized for that type of internet. As for European players uping the rate should help them as well. Yes more information takes a longer time to travel over a distance but the increase asked for in this post shouldn't make that much of a difference for over seas players.

As for Spiked, You are a moron if you think this will be an advantage for any one player. anyone with a broadband connection would benefit from the increase. Learn a bit about internet connections and the rate at which it can travel before you start open your mouth again please. Kthxbye!

It's kilobytes NOT MEGABITS!!! With dial up you get 56k, so as long as you have something >= dial up you will be able to play fine. As for "bigger numbers are not better," I would like to see you play with 30 fps in source and then play with 100. Going to be a big difference on how the game preforms. Also this is for scrims, not a pub. There is a little cvar called sv_minrate. If your connection cannot handle the min rate it will just use the max without causing you lag.

To address the whole advantage thing. If I have a brand new top of the line computer and you have a 6 year old computer, you're saying they should be the same right? So same video settings, cfg, rates, etc... The whole point of upgrading a gaming pc is so you have a legit advantage over your competition. Why should my internet be the same speed as yours if I have the ability to go above?

Then why did they make an update the game? Why do people use cable and dsl over dial up? Why do you send an email instead of a postcard? Why do you call something instead of meeting them in person?

LOL. Did you even play source before the update? It WAS broken.

I can assure you that he did play source before the update. Just because you think it was broken before the update does not mean that it was. In fact, I think you'll find many who would say that the update "broke" source. I happen to think that it was fine before, and that the update has improved it. There is no objective standard in this matter, so you should not state your opinion as fact.

Bunnyhopping, see-through smokes, unequal flashes... definitely not broken

Those were problems that the update addressed, not proof of a broken game.
aahahahahahahaha

you don't get it at all. (back to the whole rate thing)
if you think that your rate is directly related to your connection speed in kbps, you're mistaken. Also, you obviously didn't understand my statements b/c you are attacking me for stating that it's related to your connection in terms of mbps, and that's just not the case either.

go back and read; and the update killed the game regardless of whether or not it fixed the issues previous to the update or not (smokes, bhop, etc)

My point is this, and it has always been this; if you don't have a real grasp as to how the rate variable truly effect game play and network performance for all parties involved, stfu.
OK this thread has run its course.

This is a warning to some of oyu out there.
