CS:S And Steambans

Historical capture recovered from the Wayback Machine · captured 2012-03-05 · 33 posts
The TeamWarfare League is teaming up with Steambans to provide anti-cheating functionality to its CS:S division. More Information and what you need to do.
I shall post this update here, we have one person that has already asked why this is happening. We want to provide you with the best possible solution to cheating and at the same time one that will allow you more flexability.

Using Steambans shall allow us to alter the material requirements to something along these lines:

1) Remove the smoke screenshots.

Instead of a smoke screen round all players will have to start up their demo and type: sb_status and take a quick shot of that screen.

3) Team captain or founder of the team that the server is playing on needs to take an rcon status.

4) We also shall not be requiring the netgraph to be on while playing matches.

5) No longer be required to keep a score card screenshots.

Big Benifit: The servers will check with Steambans and place the steam id along with a message that it isn't banned from Steambans. If the id is banned from Steambans they shall automaticly be prevented from playing in matches on TeamWarfare League. If someone is caught by TeamWarfare CS:S staff for cheating they shall be submitted to the Steambans site to be added to their ban list.

What makes us trust Steambans and not other anti cheats? I am a member of the Steambans staff so I can verify that a player has been banned for cheating. In the past this has always been a huge issue with not being able to confirm a ban is valid.

is there a preferred way to install this plug-in on the server or its server admins choice ?

QFA. How about TWL actually tries to get their own AC client? Maybe the one that they were "in the process of creating" like 3 years ago? TWL performs as well on their promises of an anti-cheat as eX does on their promises for ESEA league.
PS: bye poh
They waited way too long to realize that this and every other "change" that was being made was too little, too late. If they had this mythical anti-cheat, maybe gungame on twl stood a chance but without it, it's over. They should just work on the ac and they have a shot to stick around with the css community. Bye bye as well
SteamBans is a good solution as an AC client and we will use it in the future. The problem is that there are underlying registration issues that we need to clear up with SB staff before I can give the okay for the rest of the community to use it.

After I host an admin meeting, and speak with SB staff, I will make it mandatory again, but with proper instructions so that everyone is on the same page.

Juvix is correct, we will be looking further at steambans, but when half of my CS:S admins could not get registered with the site there is a big problem.

Also, as far as the AC program, Athena has been working on it, but those things cost Money.. BIG money. And we are a free community league.

ECO-League was a free league that provided an anti-cheat. XPLeague was a free league that provided an anti-cheat. Maybe TWL needs to "man up" and find more sponsors to help with the "money issues."
I made a reasonable offer, and no one seemed to care. Which seems to be the trend around these parts.

You wouldn't be the first TWL admin to "not receive" an email about something the community wants done.

ok, I see the word WAS twice there. First was the AC of any use at all, and second where are those leagues today?

Haha I knew that you were going to bring that up. The reason that ECO-League died was because it had stupid admins in charge that taunted a hacker that inevitably took their website down and set them back a few months. XPLeague tried expanding too quickly and their admins couldn't keep up. An AC client doesn't kill a league. A solid sponsor does not kill a league. Both of them help EXPAND a league. Poor management is what kills a league, and it appears that is what TWL is rubbing off as.

Since when is this the only thread on the CSS forum? Also, since when is the forum the only means of communication? Also-also, who the heck are you? Admins and staff roll over faster around here than at my local McDonald's.
*chirp chirp*
We are actively looking and searching for an AC solution. That is in the realm of the AC department. This is the same issue all of the games out there.

The leagues you discuss died because they were not free leagues. They made a profit from sponsors and now that the sponsors have all but dried up, they folded. TWL does not make a profit from sponsors.

We have been trying to get small time sponsors for prizes for leagues and tournaments and found this to be difficult. The type of sponsors you are talking about need to pony up thousands of dollars and the business community is just not doing that type of thing right now. I can tell you first hand this ain't a happening.

As to the person who asked who I am, Prince of Honor has retired and I have been asked to step in and take over as Senior Staff for TF2 and CS:S. Prince has done a grat job over the years and has retired for real life reasons. Yes we have a turnover in staff. That is because this is a VOLUNTEER league. We get nothing for the work we do except the satisfaction of trying to keep Competitive PC gaming alive when the developers and the cheat/hack writers are doing everything they can to kill it!

"We get nothing for the work we do except the satisfaction of trying to keep Competitive PC gaming alive"

TWL staffers are far from the only ones that fall into that category, and far from the top as far as effort is concerned. I won't go into details or press the subject at this point since I no longer care enough about CSS to put further effort into it. However, I will plainly state that members of the community did in fact approach multiple TWL-CSS staff members with propositions of free assistance with AC solutions and were repeatedly turned down. This is a truth that cannot be ignored and the basis of much of the dissapointment that's being expressed in this thread, albeit probably the wrong thread.
As far as the AC side of it, you would need to get in touch with Athena. She is the Director of AC here at TWL (or alternately MavRic). The CSS staffers actually have little to do with AC. They are seperate areas. The CSS staffers handle the operations of the league/ladders.

While I am new to the CSS side, the COD side has tried MULTIPLE AC solutions for they are in the same shape as we are as far as AC is concerned. The problem with the ones COD tried is that EVERY TIME we crashed the AC program's site. We were too much for them to handle.

I am wide open to suggestions/ideas on what we can do to have a legitimate AC in CS:S! It does look like steambans could be a real avenue, but right now there are way too many problems getting registered. Juvix and I are actively trying to get the problems fixed with them.

In any hierarchal society, it is assumed that communication travels up the necessary avenues internally. Perhaps we've identified the main issue with TWL as a whole >.>

Realistically, if I'm working at BestBuy and a customer approaches asking about TV's, but I work in the computer department, I don't ignore the customer entirely and pretend the question wasn't asked. No, you take the customer to the correct person to answer their question, you direct the question to where it can be answered in some form.

TWL players are given match admins to communicate thru. If they aren't conveying information up the ladder, then there's a serious issue at hand.
ok spiked,

This is getting no where very quickly, if you wish to continue this, please feel free to email me and I will be happy to continue this dialogue.

What I am wanting is some ideas, suggestions, etc.. as to what we can do to help the community here at TWL. I understand that we need an AC and we are actively trying to get one. Steambans is a possibility, but there are currently too many issues with it at this time.

How can steam bans be considered a quality AC?

When 3 of our trained admins check a sent in demo, and all of them decide it's a cheater, the person will be banned. From that moment on, the cheater cannot join ANY of the Steambans protected servers anymore.

So it is actually not a client at all? Just 3 random nerds deciding someones fate? What stops somebody from getting a new steam account?

You want suggestions to help the community, but you blatantly ignore the issue at hand: communication.

I give up, I've tried to hint, steer, and assist, but TWL staffers seem to want magical fixes to all of their issues.

TWL and CSS have both been in existance for more than 6 years and you still somehow lack any kind of integration or automatic reporting system.

Don't just focus on "anti cheat system". Your forums, software, news feeds, are all sorely out of date. You could make 1 giant step forward just by having an auto reporting system in the form of a script/addon that reports to the twl site directly. That alone would cut down on some amount of smurfing and possibly restore some faith in the system as a whole. Then work from there.

The point is, there's no magical fix for anything so stop googling for a perfect solution to already exist and instead spend some time reading the hl2 sdk or the metamod sdk, or the ES wiki.

I'll also re-iterate once more: COMMUNICATION.
Both internal (amongst staff and admins) as well as external (to the twl players) about what's going on/being done.

Our biggest gripe isn't that there isn't an AC system; it's that we're constantly told that we need to use a new AC system that TWL didn't bother to properly test. Look at the forums, it's filled with "now required" & "no longer required". Proper communication could have avoided all of those headaches and we wouldn't be where we're at right now and players would be more patient with steambans (but we've already been thru xray and several other "use this"/"don't use this" scenarios that we're no longer willing to have patience with it)
*chirp chirp*
I completely agree with Spiked. I basically said what he said in other words in the soccer thread. Substitute the soccer ladder with the AC though. Those who actually try to help the site out really get no help in doing so by the TWL staff.
not a single fuck was given

/end thread
Thread ended.

Disrespectful communication will not be answered to or tolerated.
