We had a bye!

I need to know what the freak happened last night. I got home and checked the team lists and as of 7:00 EST my team, The Black Hats Division 2, had a Bye. Now I check and it says we last to a team 1-0. That is some jacked up stuff. So one minute we have a bye then less than 3 hours before you change it so we play a team. Thats some jacked up stuff. Its no wonder that you didn't fill the torny if it is run like that. I am no less than pissed off right now.
It was being said thoughout the day......many many times that brackets were not final and noone was getting a bye.

You saw a bye because 35 teams were removed yesterday because of >6 roster. Brackets were then redone.

I agree with Uki that it was stated many times that even if it said you had a bye stay tuned because teams were being rearranged.

I also think that the scheduling was hectic and did leave room for error.

A suggestion - would it be possible for TWL to move that team to another bracket and put them back in the tournament because of the confusion?

There was a lot of room for error on both sides and the good intentions of both TWL and the team that lost by forfeit created a situtation that is not positive for either.

A one time exception based on a unique criteria could be applied and it would have relatively no affect on the tournament as a whole.

All other teams should now know that they have a match no matter what the brackets say. Show up on time and ready to play. No exscuses from this point forward.
ok well let;s think about this one...... @ 7:00pm the ladders stated we had a bye...that is 3 hours before the match started.... that is just wrong. BH has been apart of TWL for a long time, we left due to missmanagment of the ladders, well I guess its time to do that again. Would have been nice to have a well run tourny. Kinda make me wish I never sent money via paypal to contribute to TWL. You guys need to get your shit together.
Chief... give them a break.. One hour before our match we weren't even on the the division we started on. As a matter of fact we weren't listed on any division.. Guess what.. I pm'd an admin and he said we were being moved do a different division and were playing at 10 vs 9 because they didn't want any bye's. All you needed to do was idle the appropriate irc channel and speak to an admin..

Overall.. considering the amount of teams that never got it together and showed up things went well..
IMO, TWL has done a fine job handling ladders. I personally do not have any major complaints.

However, it did seem like the rearrangement of the brackets could have been handled much more efficiently. Although our team is not scheduled for two more days, we received word only yesterday that we would be facing a different opponent than the one originally listed. Perhaps a sticky thread about this matter could have been posted on both this forum and the UO ladders forum.

I can definitely understand where BH is coming from. Perhaps allow them and whatever other team(s) that had this happen to them could be moved to a different bracket? There certainly can't be too many.

This is fairly straightforward:

You knew the time of your match well in advance. We posted several times in the forums that there would be no byes and that we were in the process of correcting the brackets and removing incomplete rosters. Therefore you should have planned on the match, and been had people prepared to play in it. If you had any questions about the bye an admin would have been glad to answer them, or you could have read the forum.

Think about it, the last day for adding players to the roster was Sunday at midnight. That means we had only one and a half days to go through hundreds of teams, in addition to all of the other responsibilities that we have throughout the multiple ladders and leagues, not to mention we have lives beyond the computer chair.

Rather than mismanagement, I believe it was a remarkable effort that all of the teams were able to have a match arranged within a very short time frame. Yes we could have delayed the tournament a week or so but for various reasons, not the least of which would have been the disappointment for many people, we chose to keep the original date.

We can't please everyone all the time, as much as we would ilke to, we're only human.
I would like to only make one correction to what Jagged said.

With the rosters being locked Sunday night, that gave us only half a day to go through them, re do the brackets and assign the servers.
Darn I was just going to edit my post, you beat me to it
Then you should have taken more time and pushed the tourny dates to next week. Then not to have been so rushed. And made fools of yourself in the process.
So lets think about this one...you didn't have enough time to do things......well...who's fault is that?
as you said jagged, we all have lives outside the computer chair... so when you are posted you have a bye....and an it still said that at 7:00 we went on with our LIVES and just didn't go sit on IRC and wait.
I do agree that there was plenty knowledge about the bye situation; however, I do blieve expecting extra effort on the part of the participants of a tourney is just poor management. Hear me out,

If your going to have trouble with this thing and it is as hectic as it is, it would be courteous to etleast go the extra mile to make a news post or a post in match communications instead of "expecting" everyone to pay close attention to forums and IRC channels. TWL has done a wonderful job with this tournament, but I completely disagree that anyone could possibly hold this team accountable for the screw up, that fault lies along the lines of miscommunication. Good day.
The whole point is that the tourny was set up for many more teams than signed up and you had issue with it. The brackets should have been closed with enough time to set the teams up so that issues like this did not happen... What would have happened if you did get the 200+ teams that you were looking for.
I got home to check the brackeets and saw at after 7:00 that it said we had a bye. Would it have been so hard to put in there something like TBA or Undecided or come and see. Bye mean you do not have a match/game.
But what you are saying is basically we were to all sit around on IRC until who knows what time to find out what the heck was going on.
I know it takes some work to set things up like this but a like thought about things like this would have made it somewhat easier to deal with.

I completely agree.

Again, this is an awesome tournament and will not be spoiled. It's great to see this number of teams come together to compete.

However, in all fairness to teams like BH, it doesn't seem like a bad idea to allow them an opportunity to still compete in this tourney. The teams that got the forfeit win will still advance, but BH and others who suffered the same misfortune would still have an opportunity to compete.

Very few teams recieved forfiet losses in Division 1 and 2. And I am considering a few options. That I will not go into detail at the moment.

But I will let you know my decision tonight.

I can understand the frustration, I was very concerned about it as well when I realized how little time was left to get everyone set up. Why the tournament was not postponed, I am not 100% sure of the reasons, but I am sure that postponing it would have been a much greater disappointment to many people.

In the future I expect we will try to give a longer time frame between the rosters closing and the first match. Why the time was so short this time, an admin who actually set up the schedule would have to explain the reasoning to you.

My point was not that you should have been expected to wait on IRC or spend any excessive time checking the match comms, only that you needed to check the comms at or even within a couple hours of the match. You knew when the match would occur ahead of time.

That being said, with the comms telling you that you have a bye, and assuming that you did not read the forums, I can see why you would not realize that you needed to recheck the comms.

I apologize for the confusion this caused, and I will attempt to advocate your situation with the admins who are more directly in charge of the tournament. They will likely post their response here when they have had time to look over the situation.
Thank you for your attention to this.
One side of me says the match should be made up and BH in all fairness should have an opportunity. And than the other side of me says they should be given the loss as we were for cod sd league because the other team ran game on us contradicting themselves about a time to play.

In all honesty BH should be given another shot, I dont know how they can be expected to gather the 6 people they want to play within 2 hours of a match. I understand mistakes happen and I appreciate you guys running this contest but please take into consideration a make-up match for situations like this. Goodluck BH, I hope you guys get to play : P
Thank you for your time with this mannor.

Very well said.

I agree with Teabagger. Make it a one time exception based on an extraordinary circumstance. Every team from this point forward should know to check and be ready unless an admin specifically tells them they have a bye.

Chef - read the posts before you go nuclear - Whiplash made a good point and you were getting support from the community. It's easier to make your case that way than the full frontal assualt.

and it's "matter" not "mannor".

I was just about to say the same thing. Don't go ballistic. It only makes you look stupid.

OMG

Did I just say that?

Maybe I should practice what I preach....

going ballistic?????? I don't know where you come off Fluffytuff.... but let me tell you, I responded the way I did because of a post by one of the TWL admins basicly saying "oh well your own fault". If you have any pride in what you do, or in how you prepare for a match or tourny, then you would have felt the same way. So unless you are a part of bh or you are a part of one of the teams that this happend too, the you have no clue how you would have reacted. So follow your own advice about looking stupid.
Guys just stop being it gets any further. We are looking into a way to fix this so be patient

AN english teacher, dont' forget it's AN when in front of a vowel (OR vowel sound, such as the letter H, "eche").

sorry, just couldn't resist... THIS was a grammar mistake, the other was neither a grammar, nor spelling mistake... it was just a misuse of words (mannor instead of matter).

I mistyped a friggin word....lol......

I agree entirely with the no-bye rule...its unfair to other teams that had to earn their stay.

If i was running it however, I'd reschedule the bye-matches to maybe 3 days later. That would give the teams that had a bye plenty of time to get ready for a new match. It would keep clans from having an easy excuse.

I also think it is the clan's responsibility to know whats happening in the tourney. In this case they should have known they would have to play a match anyway.

thats my 2 cents.
