Hi all,

I'm going to New York City for 5 days (3 nights) end of April with a couple of my friends. Now I need loads and loads of tips on what I can do there. Of course we'll visit the obvious stuff, like Central Park, Manhattan, etc. But we're also interested in seeing the real New York, tasting the atmosphere. Local coffeeshops that show the real NYC, restaurants in the hoods, and we also wanna try to get a New Yorker to show us around (I know there's New Yorkers giving tours in their own time for free).
Also any worthwhile events, and we wanna see the history of NYC with Manhattan etc.

So can anyone give any tips?

Mate, go to central park. Go to all the top shopping stores which you can find on the internet. Go up a few sky scrapers as well. Fed have a great time mate
Tell me your age and interests (what kinda music do you like, do you like art - if so what kind, any particular types of food you like or wanna try, what kind of atmosphere do you want in your coffee shop, etc.).

NYC is huge and has little niches for every interest so let me know what you like and I'll set you up with some good info.

Empire State Building......If you don't mind heights it is one of the best views you will ever see. Pick a sunny clear day if possible. You can see for miles. Central Park is pretty cool too. Another sight you may want to see is ground zero. It is much bigger than one would think and really makes you stop.
Give, to the big apple, a huge hug from me

same.. i used to live there..till 2 years back
Don't forget the the Nutcrackers at Generals Chinese Joint up in Harlem. Yeah, 13 kinds of liquor mixed together tastes like Juice....O yeah its under the counter, they don't got no liqour liscense. Aha keepin' it gangsta. Just remember don't drink and drive......except on the westside.
If you plan on going to a lot of places throughout the day, your best bet is to get a multipass or whatever it is called so you can take a subway trip as many times as you want.
Get a print out of the subway system. Your hotel may provide this, if not it may be available at the subway stations.

I did a lot of walking and just came across little places to eat. By far, the place I liked the best was a place in Little Italy. It didn't look as fancy as the others, but as I stayed in the line to wait to eat, everyone in the line was from NYC and said it was the best place.

little shops.. Well, plenty of those. I stayed away from the big places like on 5th ave, times square, and the sort. Although Times Square has some interesting things to see, the prices are just too much.

Talk to the people at the hotel. One time I asked the doorman about something to do at nighttime, he said he'll be back here later that night and we could hang out with his friends. We went out in Greenwich Village that night and had a blast. You could use the internet to your avantage. I usually go in the IRC channels or the yahoo chats of a city and ask people there about what's happening in the city.

I'm sure a new yorker would be best to take this topic. When I went there, we just went wherever and discovered places on our own. We just went to specicic and took it from there: china town, 5th avenue, little italy, greenwich village, wall street, etc etc.

Ellis Island is a must.

When you get in the cab to go from the airport to your hotel. talk to the taxi driver. Mine told us all sorts of stories.

It's a shame, when I went to the world trade center, they had a show inside that showed the history of NYC.

like I said., best thing is the internet. You can find all the information right there..
I'm 28, interests are many: culture, history etc. I'm in for almost everything.

This man is right, I know from first hand experience (went with my g/f and her friend and they made out with each other while I got a lap dance).

Definitely go to MOMA, it just got remodeled, and I haven't been since, but it should be nice. You can pick up cheap Broadway tickets at the TKTS stand in Times Square for shows that day.

Also, there was a little pizza place by where I lived, on 3rd Ave between 34th and 35th on the East side of the street, called Imperial Pizza. From my own experience the best freaking pie in NYC.

duke you fag
Bronx Zoo, Ground Zero, Empire State Bldg, Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island, Central Park, Rockafeller Center, Greenwich Village, maybe Chinatown, MOMA, Museum of Natural History, Intrepid Air and Space Museum (you get to walk around the USS Intrepid Air Craft Carrier) are all good stops to make. Just make sure you don't try to see EVERYTHING, or else you'll just tire your self out. And, most of all, remember it's a vacation, so just have fun.
fed, really you need to go to scores. if you are a man, which i am sure you are, you will find supreme happiness there. if for any reason the people you are with dont want to go, ditch them and go by yourself. trust me, it will be the time of your life.
I'll start with restaurants. NYC has the best food in the world, period. Screw France and Italy. NYC has the most diverse food selection anywhere. Here are a few must stop restaurants. As most restaurants for dinner will run you around $50 per person, with drinks, apps, and tip. Picking up or looking up a Zagat book will give you a better perspective, but that is a good clue.

Restaurants -

Churrascaria Plataforma - You gotta love meat to eat here.

http://churrascariaplataforma.com

Balthazar - French faire (likely to see a celebrity here)

http://balthazarny.com/splash.html

Virtually any one down Mulberry Street, south of Spring. This is Little Italy, and EVERY host/hostess will try to rape you to get you to eat at their restaurant. I recommend making this your weekend evening stop, as they tend to barracade several of the tertiary streets and make it an all out fair of people. Lots of fun, lots of stores, mostly junk though, but a good walk around with the woman.

As for where to save money, stay on the west side of the park for food. The west side is expensive, but it doesn't drop a hat to the east side. The east side is predominantly older and the younger crowds (our age, 20's, don't hang out there, unless they are loaded).

Sights and Sounds (several already mentioned)-

Empire State Building
Statue of Liberty (I believe it has reopened)
Whitney Museum
Intrepid
St. Patrick's Cathedral
Central Park
Museum of Natural History - Personal Favorite (next to the Smithsonian Museums, this is the single largest museum of its kind in America, I think)

Bottomline, there is a crapload to do, and the best thing is to ask for the daily events, as NYC hosts so much. There are parades and street fairs all the time, and you have to grab a local newspaper to see what is up. Grab a multipass, as said, so you don't have to pay the $2 every time you get on the subway. I believe the multipass is between $6-10, i can't remember. There are subway maps all over the place and there are miniature ones that will fit in your pocket. Use it sparingly, as this alerts people that you are a tourist (even though people who live there still don't know where the A train connects with the 1). The subways also run local and express, so keep aware of the times and schedules.

There is a ton more to say, but no time to type. Simply ask, as most people will help you, despite some stigmas of people keeping to one's self.

Oh, gl and hf.
Tip 1: Don't carry alot of cash on you.
Tip 2: Don't carry your wallet in a ass pocket.
Tip 3: If you feel someone brush against you be aware.

To many more to list.......
YOU NEED TO SEE A BROADWAY PLAY.

Thanks guys for the tips, let's keep them coming

We'll definately get the subway passes. And we also intend to visit a couple of musea.

As for the question of 5 days/3 nights: the total amount of days for me is 5 days. We leave from Amsterdam on wednesday morning, arriving in NYC around noon that day. Then we leave saturday evening NY time, and if you then add the time difference and flight durance, we arrive back in Amsterdam sunday morning local time. So for us it's 5 days, yet only 3 nights in NYC and 1 night in the airplane.
you are better off not taking the subway. you are just going to get lost and confused. just ake a taxi where ever you need to go
