mIRC Setup and Tutorial
Index

Introduction
mIRC is the main client used by admins and players to communicate. Admins are usually always online during their "normal" hours for their regions (NA, EU, OC). Teams use IRC to setup scrims and communicate with other teams, etc. Admins use it in order to be readily available for players that are looking for help.

mIRC Setup
In order to start this tutorial, you will need to download a copy of the mIRC client found here. After downloading and installing the program, open it up. You will immediately see a window pop up that looks like this.
NOTE: I am using a script, so it will look different, but the same procedure is still followed:

It will say that the trial version is over after 30 days, but you can use it as long as you want without registering. Just wait a few seconds and then hit Continue. Once you do so, the window will close and the mIRC Options window will open and it will look like this:

Now, it's time to fill out the fields:
  • Full Name: Your name. Most people prefer to fill in their nickname rather than their full name.
  • Email address: Your email address.
  • Nickname: The alias you will be known under.
  • Alternative: In the case that your current nickname is in use by another party, the alternative name will be used.

It's time to find the server we want to connect to. In the options window, click on the little orange star next to Connect To Server or find it in the dropdown on the left hand side of the Options window. It will look like this:

Now, click Add and fill in the information just as I have done and then click Add in this new window.
NOTE- You can find different servers closer to your area by going here:

  • Description: GameSurge
  • IRC Server: http://irc.gamesurge.net (this is default and without the http://)
  • Port(s): 6667
  • Group: Leave Blank
  • Password: Leave Blank

After doing this, make sure the server is highlighted, just as I have done:

Getting a GameSurge Authentication Account (Optional)
This step is optional, but will be discussed in the next section. An authentication account is your personal login. To obtain one, simply go here and fill out the required info, just like I have done:

Required Fields:
  • Account Name: Can be the same or different as your nickname, but will be used to log in.
  • Email Address: Your email address.
  • Confirm Email: Your email address, again.
  • Human Input Validation: Type what shows up in the box above this field.

You will receive an email... follow the instructions in that email.

Setting up your Perform
To make your IRC experience a lot easier, I will also go in depth about the Perform option. Click on Options on the left hand side under the Connect dropdown menu. After doing so, click on Perform:

The info I have there is as follows:
  • /authserv auth NAME PW -- This authenticates you with GameSurge
  • /mode $me +x -- This hides your IP from other users (i.e. Instead of caliber@111.111.111.111, you will see caliber@caliber-.user.gamesurge)
  • /join #twl_aa -- this automatically joins the TWL America's Army channel on connect.

NOTE: Make sure you have Enable perform on connect checked as I have done above. Now, click OK on both windows.

Connecting to GameSurge
You should now have no more pop ups. You will see a lightning bolt at the top left of your mIRC, click it. After doing so, you will see a lot of text scroll up and hear some beeps, don't panic it's normal.

In the window where you see all the text, you can also type /join #channelname and join other channels.

Common Commands and Explanations

CommandIts function /join #twl_aaThis command is the join command. Replace twl_aa with a valid channel name. /part #twl_aaThis command is the part command, typing /part #twl_aa will make you leave #twl_aa. You may replace #twl_aa with any channel name to leave that channel or type /part in the channel you wish to leave. Though, most people prefer to click the 'X' instead.
/quit This command will make you disconnect from the server you are connected to. /query Caliber|TWL Hi or /msg Caliber|TWL HiThis will send the private message 'Hi' to Caliber|TWL, you may also open the private message window by double clicking the nickname of the person you wish to speak privately with.

Conclusion
The end of this tutorial has been reached. Familiarize yourself with a few of the commands listed in the Common Commands and Explanations section. There are a bunch more commands that are not listed here. Just ask around on IRC or message me and I'll be glad to help.
