T:V managed to perfect the most important elements of Tribes. T:A went a bit backwards somewhat in terms of physics, but those extra elements in the gameplay make up for it.
ps. T:V is still much more of a fun game than t2 lol, otherwise why would u play it Post edited by WarrioreX at 12/14/2011 11:58:52 AM
T:A is better than T:V(also all other tribes games) physics wise. It's atleast 7-8 years newer than all those games, of course it's going to have improved physics! Understanding of natural physics and pc performance isn't an artform like game mechanics that should vary from game to game.
The difference is that the environment on T:A is larger than T:V, which i personally liked and that's a mechanic issue rather than a physics issue. It was WAY to easy to MA and snipe in T:V, even when the disc launcher was a lot slower and ultimately less accurate than previous tribes games. If it wasn't for the grappler and people learning to use it for teamwork/grouping rather than just rabbiting, that game would have been a lot easier than other tribes games.
I'm still disappointed by the fact that weapon isn't going to be in T:A. Especially because they're afraid to add it because of all the whiney T2/T1 players who left before anyone understood how to use it. It's like saying the ELF was a terrible gun because you weren't able to blow up a turret fast enough with it.
I actually find slower disks harder to MA with. I MA a lot better on T2 or on the Euro servers. Just a personal experience. Post edited by IcelandSpar at 12/15/2011 5:59:32 PM
They're both used as tools. I'll give ya that the grappler is easier to get the hang of than the ELF, but people react to them the same way. Once people have a hard time dealing with other people who are using those tools correctly they say "they aren't fair" or that "they don't require enough skill" , which is bs cause if they didn't then the said whiny people could use those tools and easily eliminate the people who are "noobs" with them.
Tools don't and can't imbalance a game they just enhance and add variety to certain physical mechanics. Overpowered weapons however do, because they don't rely on any of the games physical attributes outside of player health. (which is a big reason why automatic hit scan weapons where so unfair in T:A) If a tool that everyone has access to, in all classes, helps someone who's new learn the game quicker, how's that a bad thing?
Personally people complain about the grappler being the unfair weapon in T:V, but the really unfair and imbalanced weapon was totally the buckler. I think that shows how much they actually played the game. Cause, IMO, the buckler didn't turn into a real terror until after the game had already been out for almost 4 or 5 years. It's not unfair. You should know better. It's revolutionary. It's game breaking.
It still does not compare in any way to the elf i fail to see the point?
They never complained it was unfair. They complained that it allowed any one to become a capper because they no longer had to have escape routes. It made llama no longer llama because you weren't walking trying to find a hill to go down to gain speeed.
You were slingshotting yourself forward and probably disc jumping and reaching high speeds instantaneously.
That's why it's a game enhancement though. More fast flag grabs = more action and more of a challenge for defenders. I don't think the argument that someone who uses a grapple to make a quick flag grab is less skilled than a person running routes. There's some pretty sweet routes that are set up with grapples. Also, a lot of the close llama grabs with grapple are super easy to stop cause you can't really get that much speed on the spurr of the moment. Whether they use a grapple or not, a sloppy llama is still a sloppy llama.
As for the comparison between the grapple and the elf, i see it. Not sure why you don't. The ELF is just as game changing as the grapple when it's in the right hands. I've seen lots of FAST cappers get destroyed by people who where using the ELF to bring them down. Instead of using a tool to get away from someone you're using a tool to stop someone, simple as that. Post edited by Steven_Seagal at 12/16/2011 9:45:26 AM
No. I've never heard of ANY one complaining about the ELF. In fact, its too easy to escape it unless its the damn turret. A quick spin jump and you're out of its range. Unless you're talking about dueling its relatively weak. Maybe YOU were the one getting destroyed by a nub with the elf
Just like hitscan in T:A is a game enhancement? By your logic because its more of a challenge. And since ELF is pretty much hitscan then i'm sure you don't mind when people say both are for less skilled people.
Grappler noobified the concept of capping and rabbiting. You know why? I can swing round and round a beam or pole really fast AND switch weapons and spam grenades OR hold my buckler to reflect anything.
It made every flag chaser have to have grappler in their loadout or they would be left in the dust. Automatically down to two weapons just like T:A. (I don't see why any TV player complains about this when they were grapple whores)
Don't even start with the sniper rifle when you could easily stay low and STILL gain momentum while avoiding it or just grappling yourself down real fast.
Do i need to list more ways it game changing and ELF is pathetic? Up until now you've probably argued with T2/T1 players on why grappler is "awesome". But i've played TV most. And i can still see why they complain.
TBH though, i'd rather take grappler ANYDAY over this absolutely horrid "carving" in T:A. Stay still fuckers.
You've obviously not played with people who where good with ELF or skiing/chasing for that matter (at least not in T1, I can't remember if ELF carried over to T2). You ELF someone when they come in for the flag and if you're a decent shot you've totally disrupted their entire route or caused them to damage themselves just as much as you would have with an MA, except you've done it with a weapon that's way easier to shoot than the spinfusor. If you miss and forget to throw a gernade before they DJ, you yourself DJ to cut them off, ELF to zap their energy/speed when coming down a hill and then it's just dueling or shooting a slow moving target from then on. That's why the ELF is a game changer for those who can ski but can't shoot well, else you'd have to chase someone forever or have to land more well timed shots.
There use to be tons of people complaining about it, but not like there are with the grappler. Likely because, as I stated earlier, that mentality just hadn't had time to develop yet.
As for a third weapon, you're right it does reduce the defender from having three, but it does the same to the capper so i don't see what the big deal is. The primary weapons for chasing someone is disc and chain anyways, if you can ski, or in this case grapple well, that's all you really need.
And yea, i'll agree that the buckler+grapple is lame, but that's because the buckler is lame and is the real issue of imbalance in T:V, rather than the grapple. Other than that, someone rotating in circles or spamming grenades? seriously? The game is outdoors, on large maps, with both explosive and laser weapons, why not just shoot them?
ELF and the old AR's from T:A are both hitscan and that's partly why people complained about the ELF. Because in the hands of someone who understood it's purpose and had reasonable skiing ability, it made capping VERY difficult without at least one escort. However, it didn't do damage like the old T:A AR's, which is why they where considered cheap weapons
If there's any reason why the elf isn't considered a game changer it's only because it was in the original tribes and tribes itself has just gotten worse without it.
Also, I wouldn't concede that just because something is game changing, doesn't necessarily mean it's game-breaking. There's lots of great additions to tribes games that came through mods and updates that changed how the game was played for the better. Example; lots of the x2 improvements and almost every mod for T1.

Ok, fair enough. I didn't play enough to be competitive in T2, so i can't speak for that.
Also, i guess it's worth mentioning that the ELF from T1 was notorious for crashing peoples computers. (another reason why people hated it) Post edited by Steven_Seagal at 12/16/2011 4:14:46 PM
