A Roanoke County man was killed Sunday when his vehicle ran off Crowells Gap Road and rolled about 40 yards down a steep embankment.
Jeffrey C. Hawley, 34, was driving a 2002 Nissan Xterra west in the 7100 block of Crowells Gap Road about 4 p.m. when he lost control and went off the right side, according to an investigation by Officer R. Vass of the Roanoke County Police Department.
When responders arrived at the scene, they found a juvenile female on the side of the dirt road, said Capt. Wanda Clements of the Red Valley Rescue Squad. She had apparently climbed back to the road after the wreck. Hawley was still in the Xterra, which had rolled about 40 yards down an embankment already littered with debris, including a refrigerator and a mattress.
The juvenile, who had been wearing her seat belt and was not identified because of her age, was taken to an area hospital. Hawley, who was not wearing his seat belt, died at the scene.
Police say neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the wreck, and no charges will be filed. Police still aren't sure what caused the wreck, said Lt. M.J. Warner of the Roanoke County Police Department. The road sometimes gets damaged by winter weather, especially on the steeper Franklin County side, but the stretch where Hawley wrecked was not particularly rutted.
David Murphy, who lives on Crowells Gap Road just a short bit from where the wreck occurred, said motorists sometimes use the steep road as a shortcut from U.S. 220 to parts of northern Franklin County. He said traffic increases a little more each year, with about one vehicle per year running off the road. Most of the wrecks, though, seem to be relatively minor, he said.
