250 kph+ for veteran skii'ers

Historical capture recovered from the Wayback Machine · captured 2014-04-26 · 27 posts
Sounds like even the best wont be able to get past 350kph. Got this from a developers diary I read. You guys think thats fast enuff? Prolly no more 400kph+ cap routes.

Quote from article:
"Veterans can achieve speeds in the range 100-250kph+ with a skillful combination of thrust and skiing to both preserve their current speed and convert vertical velocity into horizontal speed. We call this the "high end"."

Another quote:
" Finally, by having no hard speed cap in the game, we guarantee that there is no limit to how fast a player can move, except their own skill."

I wonder how much disc jumping will help speed gains? And i wonder what the top realistic speed will turn out to be.

Link to article. Some cool movies on there too if you havent already seen them(click the movie tab on that page to see them). The fixing of texture stops makes me happy.

Speed means nothing unless it feels like you're going fast. 250kph might feel like 400kph.

I suppose you right. The main reason speed is so important is that if your hauling ass you're harder to hit. So i guess as long as that speed feels fast enuff to be fun and your rewarded for it by it being very difficult for enemies to kill you going near a top speed, then I'll be happy. Im getting the feeling they arent going to let T:V suck. The more i read about T:V the more i get excited and think this is gunna be a smash. I wonder what it will be like to have big cash tourneys for a tribes game :>.

You're missing some key things here though, most notably: how far is a kilometer?

In essence you really can't tell how fast that is because it depends heavily on the speed of weapon's fire, the scaling of the game, and the design of the maps.

In T2 on most maps people--even skilled players--rarely exceed 250kph unless they're using a route and it sounds to me like he's talking more about improv skiing than routes or anything. I was kinda surprised that he said intermediates would go around 100... in t2 you regularly go 100 down a hallway inside a base, much less outside.
so i guess all i can do is sit here and wonder till beta.

Actually, those speeds sounds PERFECT. He said "skiing", not disc jumping AND skiing >:D

*drools*
The speeds will probably *feel* different. In T2 when you're walking as a light you go like 40 kph. It feels pretty unrealistic.

T:V's idea of 250 kph might = T2's 400 kph back cap routes.
plus theres no speed caps.

that is like ownage...
i guess i took the 250kph to be with DJing. I havent actually heard anything about DJ's. Will there actually be the DiscJump effect?

As long as the disc has splash, a discjump should be possible. Whether it is the same as the DJ in T1/T2 remains to be seen.

Reminds me of an old jet flying game on SNES.. I always flew close to the ground so it seemed like I was going faster.
Beta will tell us all.
It sounds like the maps are somewhat smaller too so it may not be possible or efficient to use routes that set up 500m out to the side or rear.

this is completely ignoring the fact that irregularities in the game environments probably exist.

for example, the TR2 cannons that propell you out at high speed. KP's playing a part in T:V and i think its safe to say those things will show up somewhere in the game

also, you'll have maps similar to confusco that feature an enormous drop to accelerate you right off the bat.

and as if that wasn't enough, you'll have morons like me messing with the map editors, creating 1km wide halfpipe interiors, water with speed-increasing properties, and map-sized craters to push skiing speeds to the limit, like i did with T2
Sounds like fun to me!

Two things. The first is that one of the things you quickly learn is this business is that in-game, actual numbers mean very little. In one game, 200 kph will seem slow, in another 200 kph will seem blindingly fast. T:V is not designed to reach a specific speed, it's designed to create a specific feeling of speed.

The second is that what a developer says is possible in an open ended system (like skiing in T:V) and what players actually achieve are two seperate things. I'm sure the T1 development team would have happily told you that 100 kph was possible only by falling from a great height. We know what happened there.

Thrax
I was just about to say what thrax said.

You can tell me I'm travelling 3 times the speed of light, but if I feel like I'm wading through pea soup then the numbers don't mean anything.

Don't focus on the numbers. They are relative until you sit down and play the game. You may get in game and find that you're moving along at 50kph but it feels like you're moving pretty well...

then suddenly 200kph will seem really fast.

ps HELLO THRAX
Hi Thrax! Thanks for peeking your head in here.
Yeah we appricate it when the Sierra/Dev members come and talk to us TWL people too :]
^^
Man ... i cant wait to play

Not true. Try disc jumping in base.

EDIT: To explain, weapons have both a damage modifier and a concussion modifier. The higher the damage modifier the more you will get hit, but this is not necessarily related to the concussion modifier which determines how far you will be thrown by the blast. Both of these factors are decreased by percentages based on the splash radius of the weapon and how far away you are from the epicenter of the blast.

In base, discs did about the same amount of damage but had a much lower concussion, so they really didn't give you much speed.
