If you're interested in checking out the performance you can expect from T:V, you could download the UT2k4 demo and play that for a while. Thrax said the results would be similar.
Thats good news. I am running a gf3 right now (upgarde this week to an ATI 9700 pro w00t!) and i get very solid performance from ut2k4.

I have the 9700 Pro and I get great performance in the UT Demo even with 6X FSAA and 16X Anisotropic filtering on.
just for all those idiots out there (aka me ) wut does UT2k4 stand for?
unreal tournament 2004...
ut2k4 ran smooth as hell for me. and I plan on a total upgrade, so this is great news
wow, never looked at it like that. ut2k4 ran just fine, and I also plan to upgrade.

Next question is the cg over-heating, how many bullets in a row does it take to over-heat? Because If I can still whore in 4-5 secs, and it over-heats in 6 that shouldn't be a prob. Anyone know anything about this?
I guess I'd better warn you: min spec on T:V is GF4. UT2k4 is ugly by comparison.

Is ATI Radeon 9700 going to work?
my gfx is just kicking any games' ass
I'm not getting very solid performance on UT2K4. :/ I get about 30-40 fps on all modes w/ 32 people. Settings are on on normal except some are on low.

System Specs:
Athlon XP 2500+
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
512MB DDR
Albatron KX600 Pro
System Specs:

-Inspiron XPS

INTEL PENTIUM 4 - 3.4GHZ
128MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700
1GB DDR 400MHZ Ram

So was Thrax inaccurate in his statement that UT would be comparable to T:V?

I guess the real question here is...

My computer runs UT2k4 fine. It's close to the point that i'd want to upgrade. I want to have a good system for T:V, but by no means need to have 100000 FPS.

If I get say 35 FPS default on UT2k4, could I expect about 35 on T:V?

Or should I expect more like 20?

Yeah, i'm about the same, except I have a 1.333 gHz with a GF3ti500.
I just bought an intermediate upgrade (it's in the mail ) and I hope it'll do fine.

XP 2200+
512MB PC2700
ABIT NF7 nForce2
GeForce FX 5200

EDIT: I wanted something that was definitely better than what I had but not too extreme (new baby, you know ).

I have a AMD XP Barton 2800+, 1gig pc3200, Fx5900 128mb...everything on max in ut2k4, and I never get choppy fps. Always above 55.
Dev said older cards/CPUs would be able to run the game in a playable state but to get good FPS @ high res your going to need a PCI-X mobo/card for the transfer rate it offers.
main differense with tribes games is that they usually have a lot more players playing (more explosions and chaos), as well as much larger environments. This usually requires more stuff to be rendered and therefore graphics performance would usually be a bit more demanding than a game where the arenas are smaller and players are more or less bound to the ground.
HOW do you check your FPS in UT2k4 ?
open console (hit ~)
type in:
stat fps
I'm on a fairly modest system:
AthXP 1800
GF3
512 ddr

However, my performance in ut2k4 is acceptable--on par with T2 in fact.

Personally, I was quite surprised to get such performance. However, though they did say T:V and unreal would be somewhat simmilar in performance it looks to me like T:V is well ahead graphically and thus will probably only be able to yield such framerates at low visual quality.

Therefore, I still plan to upgrade.
my gf4 4600 ti chaintech gold gets me 50-80 fps (i checked using fraps) in UT2k4. when the T:V beta comes out, i'll be getting a new card.

if you're looking for the current top of the line card, i'd suggest teh GF fx 5950 ultra from MSI. it's not only one of the hottest looking cards, but it's prolly the best when it comes to games running the UT engine (like T:V will be using) and it doesn't conflict w/ T2 like the ATI cards.
GeForce4 ti4200
Pentium4 2.8C
512 dual channel DDR
800FSB

Dunno what other specs make a difference.. anywho..

Deathmatch: 84 FPS Avg
Onslaught: 57 FPS Avg

what drivers are you using DF? i have the same card/same ram but get about 10 less fps than you.
Thanks for the info
would a geforce fx 5200 be ok? I was thinking about upgrading to a radeon 9600xt, would that be much of an upgrade and worth $150?

I dont know shit about this stuff, please help :[

If anyone needs a to upgrade their video card and has a GeForce 2 or below let me know.

I have a GeForce 3 with a Thermaltake crystal orb and ram sinks on both sides for good OCing. I will sell the thing for $40.00 Shipped in the USA and $45.00 to Canada.
Uhm, didn't the devs say in the WOFN interview that a 256meg vid card and PCI Express were going to be the recommended?

If that's the case, then I would assume anyone with a GF3/ATI9200 or lower would be disappointed.

Let's hope PCI Express won't make a difference this early as it would usually indicate a poor coding job on part of the game developers. Video cards should have enough memory and much faster addressing of that memory than for PCI Express to make enough difference over AGP 8x. Although I'm betting they're just saying PCI Express will be recommended simply because it's the next platform tomorrow's fastest GPUs will be found on as it should eventually replace AGP and make a difference in the future (more distant than T:V or so I'd thought at least).

256MB onboard memory sounds a little demanding, perhaps for high resolutions and AA/AF situations it will be ideal, I guess we will have to see.

A 5200 is a terrible terrible choice. If anyone has purchased a board with a 5200 GPU on it, I'd reccomend doing anything possible to try and return/exchange it. A GeForce3/Radeon 8500/GeForce 4 Ti (even MX in some cases) are much better choices than a 5200.

Don't go with any card right now to play a game that is still several months off unless you have no card now and have games to play today. Your money saved will go a lot farther in the future when faster cards become cheaper than what you could buy today and would struggle to play T:V once it gets here.
I got a buddy who has a 5200 ULTRA and it works just fine to play tribes and ut2k3, but i have heard there is quite a difference in ultra and non ultra. if you wanna know about benchmarks and test go read up on it at http://www.tomshardware.com
The price of graphics cards is always dropping i would have to agree dont buy for a game that isnt out. I bought a 9700 aiw pro for about 400 bucks less than a year ago and its about 100 bucks cheaper now. Graphics cards seem to follow this pattern no matter what if you are buys top end stuff. Just remember what the 9800xt cost today and on newyears check the price again you will be amazed. peace.

I've go the same laptop with just 512 meg in it. Not as smooth as my gaming system, but it lets me play while on the road.
Dis is some high Quality H2O

a 5200/5600 Ultra is about the equivalent of a Ti4200/4400. The only benchmarks the 5200/5600 Ultra are faster (by small margin) in, are dx9 games (like ut2k3).

I highly suggest to anyone getting a new card, don't waste your money on the 5200/5600 Ultra's.

the asshole of the tribes community

I got my 5200 for free and after installing my new shit last night, I already want to get rid of it.

I may wait until closer to the time that T:V comes out to get rid of it and buy something better.

I had a GeForce2 Pro 64MB DDR. Should I use that until T:V instead of the 5200?

Ok, I am building a new system (because my old system went kaput ) and i need to know if what I have coming will be ok for T:V. The system will be based around a Barton 2800, 9800 pro, and 512 of 3200 DDR. Will I be able to run this game? heck, with all the talk of issues with Radeon/ T:2 I'm worried I will have issues running Tribes 2 with it.
