As somewhat of a newb to JK2 and online gaming period, i'm wondering which view is better? I realize that everyone probably has a preference. I actually use 3rd....I have'nt really tried 1st....would my game improve???
First person gives you higher frames per second.
Really....didn't know that

preciate the nfo AOL Man
3rd person is a must for anyone on Defense.

You can also use 3rd person to look around a corner without given away the fact that you are right there at the corner.

Ah yes...I wasn't sure, but thanx for confirming that Hoby!
I prefer going into saber when capping since it gives you more escape options and only switching to guns when necessary. All other times I usually stick with 1st person. Oh wait, you're asking for the all-stars' preferences.....nm.
everybody is an all-star compared to my meager skill level
I mainly stay at 3d person bc i feel more in control of where i'm at, having 2 diffrent views can throw me off sometimes.

3rd person, I like the ability to have a larger area of view than just a simple forward look that 1st person has. and its easy to sneak up behind or come on the blind side of someone using 1st person.
First. Any good player doesnt need to see where ppl are around corners.. you use your ears. Noise is the key.

CS teachs you alot ^^
orrrr...you could just be smart and clip the wall with 3rd person

chiznoca, yur pretty good. I'd played ya some recently....and i use third person always... i think it makes it so that you can also see behind ya also. Its helpful.
1st person
You have much better aim.
I use 3rd. I like to see where I'm landing when I jump. Plus I'm mostly Defensive and I like being able to see all around me then just forward in front of me.
how about both?
3rd person all the way. Makes it so much easier to see things. Also you can increase your POV without to much distortion.
I had all my binds on like eight keyboard keys. Mouse left n right buttons (Razor) basically toggled between setting to either force or weapon binds. I walked around with saber a lot cause people liked stealing my guns and I could easily switch to any weapon anyway.
What ajax said... 1st is easier to aim with.. and you shoduelnt need to SEE whos behind u and behind walls.. you should hear them. Jk2 is a pretty fast paces game and all (especially when you throw force speed/rage in there) so no1 is gonna just sit by a corner..

1st = way to go
1st all the way. I used third for I don't know how long. My aim sucked. lol.
if you get used to 3rd, and learn its advanteges it can be much better than 1st. I used 1st person ALOT before I was ever in a ctf clan, so I know what its like.
First, I'd like to applaud CHiZNoCa for posting an intelligent question, and thanx to everyone for not turning it into a flame war. Second, I prefer 1st person as I grew up with Doom and Quake, and my aim is better there. Although I can see some advantages with 3rd person my aim sux with it, and I'm waaay too lazy to learn how to shoot again.

Eh my experience is this....if your defense its SO much better to be in 3rd person. I'll cite an example.

In ctf_bespin in the flag hallway, in the corner with the repeater. You can stand in the corner and angle yourself so you can see down both hallways when in 3rd person mode....but not in 1st person mode. 3rd person gives you alot more situational awareness....and that can make the difference when playing in a highly competitive match.

WHen it comes to aiming....eh you just gotta get used to it. I play in 3rd all the time and I found it not much of a problem for aiming.....you just have to detatch yourself from the fact that you see yourself on screen. Forget your even there for a moment and just realise you still have the same old crosshairs as before. You get used to it...trust me.
i use first person, but i wish they would make it so that you can see in 3rd person but your body is semi transparent. that would be awesome.
LoL Aoshi .. i have found myself wanting that feature too everynow and then :P .. being that I am a flag carrier sometimes the combination of 3rd person and that flag on your back can make you totally blind .. btw I am a 3rd person perspective freak .. but I am finding out 1st person offers some very cool subtleties.
1st person hands down

easier to aim (being quake/HL vet), not too hard to get used to with increased fov, also I'd trade being able to see around corners for being able to see directly in front of me
BiG sHOUTS to erybODY for replying....and tHanx AnathemA
and DarkSaber for the comps....thIS is excellent feedback for me....sO I can oneday stOMP wit da BiG DAwgz! right Now i'm still a 3rdpersonaholic but that could explain y my aim is garbage....I've played 1stpers a few timez....but miss-hopped in Bespin and NS Streetz like crazy!

first person just takes practice to refine jumping with. Once you get the hang of it, I'm pretty sure you'll like it better for capping purposes anyway.
I use 1st person for my guns and 3rd for when i have my lightsaber out. its that simple. 1st for guns for better aim. and 3rd for lightsaber for better d since i never have alightsaber out unless i have the flag.
1st person. I feel like I have a better sense of the overall surroundings in front of me and better aim.
I find it easier to jump in first person maybe its just me though.
no allstars have replied to this thread yet chiznoca, but i will be the first.

i use 1st person for three reasons:
- superior aim
- easier movement
- easier strafe and circle jumping

you can't really get a good circle jumping flow in 3rd person.
I must admit that I headsnag less in bespin trying make that hallway-to-flag hop while in 1st person, I just have trouble judging distance when I can't see my feet.....but like khz|echo says i guess it takes practice to get used to it...so if I happen to be in a game and u see a lotta "CHiZNoCa has killed himself" you know its me experimenting jumps in 1stperson!...however i do get a kick outta using 3rd to peep two hallways at once on D!
hehe@ -matt

Thank u sir for your All-Star input.
nah matt I posted before you, your the 2nd
Uh, I dunno what Matt is smoking but 1st person doesn't give u easier movement, don't listen to that. 3rd person clearly gives u an expanded view of ur surroundings, which also allows u to actually see where ur landing when u make long jumps.

And I dunno about u guys but my hit percentage with the Repeater/Golan/Missiles atleast doubled when I switched to 3rd person, simply b/c u can judge where people r going to go way easier and u don't have annoying weapon firing effects filling half ur screen. After 1 game of 3rd person you'll see what I mean. U won't ever wanna go back.
TO: All those who can't aim using 3rd person.

When using 3rd person the "reticle" tends to move around a lot. I think this is the reason people say they can't "Aim" using it.

Well.. give this a try:

\cg_dynamicCrosshair 0

By default this is set to 1. But setting it to 0 causes the reticle to stay in one place. Hence, making it much easier to aim in 3rd person.

Hope this helps

RE: Hearing instead of peaking around corners..

Yes hearing a person come'n is very helpful. BUT you can see them long before you will hear them by using 3rd person.

its far easier to circle jump in 1st person, but none of you really know how to do it so i guess you wouldnt know... you use the crosshair and the gun as a guide kind of, its hard to explain. i tried 3rd for a day and didn't like it, especially when i had the flag where it would block my view.

about aiming.. 1st person will give you more precise aim, especially if you tweak your config to turn off view bobbing and some other visibility shit. since the actuall dodging movment in this game is pretty slow, it makes 3rd person playable. yes you go fast with speed and rage but usually in a predictable straight line and easy to hit, especially when you're running in ctf. if you tryed to play 3rd person in q3 or ut2k3 for example, you wouldn't do to well. you need precise aim with 1st person for all the fast dodging. plus seeing your own player on the screen is just another thing to distract you from the enemy.

visibility is the only upside to 3rd person IMO.
Yeah Matt pretty much summed up why first person is > third. 3rd is nice for some visiblity situations which is why it's nice that the saber automatically turns it on because yeah when i'm trying to scope out enemy D's or figure out where NOT to go with the flag I'm not trying to kill anyone so saber is perfect for that, but with the flag it's all about getting the hell out and plowing anything in your way which isn't as easy in third person imo third just distracts me.
Matt, I've been circle jumping since Q2. Yeah it would be easier to do it in 1st person but u will never need to use it in the CTF scene of JK2. I'm trying not to make this an argument...maybe it's just me but I predict where people r gonna move and jump better with 3rd person...that's what brings my accuracy up. I actually hit the target with 3rd instead of firing at where I THOUGHT the target was gonna go and missing.

Also for cappers in 3rd person yeah I agree that the flag gets in the way sometimes but it only blocks what's about 5 ft in front of u. U can still see the player and his team color. U don't need to see the entire model of the player to know if it's an opponent or a teammate. heh, w/e model the player is if it's blue u shoot it and if it's red u keep going...or vice versa.

What Hoby said about seeing before hearing is also true ^^

I love u 3rd person
