Ugh, thats the more side side of cosplay. Its only going to get worse where I am this August because Otakon'll be in town. That brings all sorts of people out of the woodwork and into where I work.
Incidentally, as I was scrolling through those pics, my sister said the second-to-last one was a "shitty attempt at Sailor Mercury". I'm still laughing.
Also, the first pic is someone dressed as Ulala from Space Channel Five, the most bizarre game ever. Well, that and Rez.

Think along the lines of people dressing up as, say, Superman for Halloween. Those people dress up in costume to play\act like a character from movies, tv, etc...
There were a few really hot girls roaming the halls of A-Kon. The one dressed up as "Faye" was really hot lookin' Her shorts stopped at the right place. So was the little brunette in the red and black latex.
Some shouldn't have been allowed to wear bikinis. Oh, the rolls, the rolls... *shudder*
...Then there are the guys dressed up in girl bunny suits... Saw one cross the floor from my booth. Eeep.

Otaku is japanese for a collector or something... so the name Otakon is a play on the words =P
Basically, "Otakon" is one of the biggest anime conventions on the east coast. But yeah, fried is right about it being a play on the word "otaku", which can mean collector, but its often applied as "fan" for anime enthusiasts. God, I sound like a geek. Gonna shut up now and go back to bed.
Hanging at an Anime Con is definately a unique experience... The dealer booths are very tempting, the fan appreciation is great to see, even when it goes to extremes its amusing to watch. ...Being surrounded by cute hyper anime girls wearing thongs
