Server Help :)

Please don't trash me for asking, but i do need some help. We are new to running a server, and we have a private server that we are renting. It is supposed to stay passworded at all times, but every day when i go to it to check, its open and people are playing. I have set the commands using RCON and it seems to work, until the next day when i come back and its open again.
I have asked the server rental company, and they say the cfg file looks good, and it should be working, that i must be entering something wrong.
Can some one tell me specifically the steps to protect my server.???? Please...

Thanks
Bartok
Does your autoexec or server cfg specify the password using the seta or set command? If it's been using "set", try using "seta" instead.

If you still run into problems, attempt using the private slots password instead of a server password. Set the max clients to the same as your private clients and set a private client password, use that pass to join the server.

If you don't want ppl to see ur server make sure the gamespy var is set to 0.
I have entered:
rcon seta sv_privatepassword "passwordhere"
rcon set password "passwordhere"
rcon set sv_privateclients 12

it is a 12 slot server.

there is a list of commands and also some other files you will need for your server. I will also be putting up some server cofig.s in the next day or two.

Well unfortunately it didnt fix for long. That night again it was "working".
But last night i went and looked and it was not passworded and people were playing and causing "mischief".

I am almost at a loss as to what to do.
I put in the following. Am i missing something?

rcon seta sv_privateclients 12
rcon seta password Ourpassword
rcon seta sv_privatepassword ourotherpassword

Is there another command i need to do?

Thanks in advance for any help!
Bartok
try putting the password in quotes.
and in the config file, you don't need the term "rcon" before the command

ie in a config file it should just say

seta sv_privatepassword "boobjob"
set sv_privateclients 12

also, if your doing this in console remotely, it's always good practice to restart after setting a password.
Yes, i am doing this in remote console.
i did do rcon restart.
Like i said, it seems to work for a time.
for instance i have others check to see if they can get in or not.
and they cant.
But i come back the next day and its like i did nothing.
Very frustrating...

After reading your posts itseems like you are always making the server private through rcon. Have you tried putting the commands in the config file? Some server companies reboot their servers every night (to clear memory leaks and what not) and so if you don't have these commands in your config file, your server would be public. Sorry if I misunderstood and you do have these command in your config. If that is the case perhaps you should change your rcon password.

Don't take life too seriously. You'll never get out alive.

I have only put these in through RCON.
I have not gotten into the CFG file on the server. I had the server company check, and they said it looks fine.

With what you say about it possibly not keeping it in the cfg file, i will try to FTP and see.
Thanks for the perspective. I really appreciate the suggestions.

Bartok
Yeah man, that is deff what your problem is then. You need to put it in your server.cfg file. Just putting it in thru RCON is fine for maybe a match or something but when your server reboots or goes down or whatever, it comes back up with the server.cfg file and there is no pw there. You need to shut your server down, ftp in and get the server.cfg file, edit it to reflect your password and then ftp it back to the server. Start up your server and you should be good to go. It should always remained passworded from there on out.

RCON commands do not write the the config file, they just simply change settings for the time being. If you want anything permanent, either make a config yourself or edit your server.cfg. Good luck!
Thanks Xtinct. and all you who relied.

I will Def check this.

Bartok
yah, i think we got to the root of the problem... gj, i'm 99% positive that's ur problem. If you run into problems a lot of servers will set the password for you if you can't figure it out, but I'm sure you'll have no probs adding that info to ur config. Congrats on ur fix. GJ everyone that helped.

edit: by servers i mean server hosting companies... clarification

Well, i was successful in changing the CFG file.
However it still didn't solve problem.
Although, i put in another support ticket, and it's not only me i find out that is having this problem.
So the server company is looking into why the servers aren't working properly.

But thanks for all the help. It was indeed helpful, and i did learn some things.
Thnaks again.
Bartok
try rcon sv_privateclients 12 ....instead of rcon set sv_privateclients 12...there is no set between the rcon and the sv
