COPPA Agreement

Historical capture recovered from the Wayback Machine · captured 2003-01-28 · 16 posts
In the next couple days all users will see a one time COPPA (Children's On-line Privacy Act) agreement page requesting age verification. All new users will receive the same verification request henceforth as well. It's pretty basic stuff, but it's needed in order to provide additional things to you, the users.

Teamwarfare apologizes for the inconvenience.

cool so no more little kids :P. how are you going to do it again
if there is indeed a child below the age of 13, can't he just "agree, and i am of age 13 or over" ?? Just wondering on how this would work. (im 16 so i do not need to worry) just asking for information thats all. Thank you
what if i know people under the age of 13 that play this game and want to join are are as good as some of the rest of us i dont have to worrie i waz just wondering me personaly i am 21
Someone under 13 could easily bypass it. 1. If it's just somethin that asks, they could say they are. 2. If it asks for your birthday, they just put in anything before 1989 for the age. I'm 16, so I don't have to worry about it, but it's not like the age verification would stop anyone.
Its based on honesty since it cannot be proven. It's probably just like any forum site. When you register you click the ofer age 13 link for verification.

There are certain laws which require parental permission under 13 years of age. I believe, as with other sites, if you are under 13 you can still sign up, but you also must provide an email address of the parent etc. The site is probably doing it for legal/technical reasons.
Yes, some sites will allow you to sign up if you are under 13, hoever it is up to the discretion of the site to do so. We are opting not to do this because installing the facility to do this is cost prohibative. Basically if you say "no" tot he "Are you over the age of 13?" question, your account will be locked and we will forward you to disney.com or somthing.

This is being done in order to facilitate the offering of sponsored events with prizes. Most companies interested in sponsoring require COPPA compliance before they will even talk to you.

You are right. What COPPA does is put the onus of age validation on the user, not the site. Essentially we are protected because the underage person lied.

Tha only alternative would be to install a $1 chage to register via credit card to prove consent by an adult, which is basically never going to happen.

I laugh at COPPa agreement
It strictly is there to protect the site. If you lie, its your problem.
