TWL Invite League – Week 7 (Monday, November 8th)

This week our Invite Teams played Bridge SE. Bridge SE is a heavily defense favored map and because of this, I didn’t expect to see the huge score deltas like we did last week (last week, the closest score was 10-2). Overall the scores were closer, but there were still a few matches that saw huge one-sided victories.

+NATO+ - -Rising Storm- (6-6)
Last week NATO had trouble getting any traction against ST-6. Perhaps their loss (1-11) really motivated them to tighten up because this time NATO gave Rising Storm its second tie. While it’s not a win, it should be considered a victory for NATO against such an accomplished team like ^rS. NATO started on defense and held a 5/1 lead at halftime. When they moved to assault, Rising Storm prevented them from extending that lead. NATO was able to pull out a single round on assault guaranteeing them the tie after a calamitous error by fresh (he got nuked by a 203 hiding like a little girl on the defense stairs).

While I would have normally given the nod to ^rS to win this match, I’m impressed that NATO could pull out a tie. It says volumes about both teams – NATO for their ability to come back from a tough loss last week and Rising Storm’s demonstrated skill as the team everyone recognizes as the “team to beat” in this division.

Rising Storm’s next match is against Masterful-and-Determined on Pipeline. I’m predicting a blowout win in favor of Rising Storm with a 9-3 or better victory.

-Logic- > Blood Brothers (11-1)
Logic has completely conquered their division. They’ve won 7 straight league matches and have only lost a total of 8 rounds! Their opponent, the Blood Brothers, have had a really rough time. The Blood Brothers have failed to win any matches (although they did pull off a tie against DVC). Logic did not disappoint as they crushed the Blood Brothers 11-1. I believe that Logic may be using Voodoo magic.

Logic plays DVC next Monday on Pipeline. DVC has some strong CQB players and are particularly creative with grenades. However, Logic has a long-standing reputation as being insanely difficult on pipeline. I’m going to predict a 10-2 or better victory for Logic.

.instruments of god.™ > Force Recon (12-0)
IoG played Force Recon this past Monday and completely dominated again. Like I noted last week, this division provides no real threat to IoG’s rule. Force Recon is a talented squad, but they’ve just got nothing against the early favorite for this season’s invite league championship.

Next week IoG plays BaD Karma. Barring any major mishaps, I believe IoG will take this 11-1 (or better).

Masterful-and-Determined < SEAL Team – 6 (0-12)
When ST6 returned from their vacation from America’s Army, a lot of people wondered if the modifications in their roster and the time away from the game would affect their play. ST6 has been determined to show that they are still “ST6”.

MAD had nothing to stop ST6 on both sides. ST6 controlled the match and completely rolled over MAD without looking back. This has been traditionally a weak map for MAD so I’m expecting more out of them next week. However, their next match is against ^rS, so it’s unlikely we’re going to see a win.

Next Monday ST-6 combats NATO on pipeline. Should be a tight match, but my guess is that it’ll be an 8-4 win for ST-6. The real variable will be NATO - their playing has been inconsistent. We know they’re capable of some impressive work but they just haven’t played up to their potential in all of their league matches. That’s why I’ve given ST-6 the predicted win.

Reborn Soldiers < overRated (5-7)
overRated has been hemorrhaging for a while and many have speculated that they wouldn’t be able to keep the squad together. Unfortunately, the speculation was correct. Within the last week, oR posted an announcement stating their plans to disband the squad. Today, even their site is down. It’s a real shame because oR was one of the toughest squads in the game.

Scarface had been doing a lot to keep oR viable. He had tried to keep them active and participating in the leagues. Despite all the difficulties around them, oR has managed to remain extremely competitive. In the Bridge SE match against [RS] for this week, many had expected a tight match, but few had predicted that oR would be victorious.

[RS] has strengthened their roster, worked on honing their skills, and has become a very strong force in Invite league. This is their first loss and they’re barely hanging on to the lead. They only have 2 more total rounds won than oR. However, oR’s “bye” dooms them to second place because they really won’t have another shot at first. Even if AFF does show up (they forfeited last week) for their match against [RS] next Monday, it’s almost guaranteed that they’ll lose to [RS]. This gives [RS] the top spot for the playoffs.

Reborn Soldiers plays American Freedom Fighters next Monday. Provided that the match is played, I favor [RS] 9-3 (or greater).

Red Dawn > Diligencia Vis Celeritas (8-4)
Red Dawn has been steadily improving in the past few months. They seem to be hitting their stride and winning some good matches against good teams.

In their match against DVC they started on defense, which, on a defense favored map like this, is a strong psychological advantage. At halftime RD held a 4/2 lead. I’ve always believed that if you make it through assault on Bridge SE and win 2 rounds, you’re doing really well. Unfortunately DVC’s defense had trouble dealing with RD’s assault and they gave up another 4 rounds - costing them the match.

Although many of the rounds were tight, and in one case came down to a 1v1 situation (not to mention a lucky 203 spam shot which killed 2 DVC members), DVC just couldn’t adjust fast enough for RD’s changing tactics. DVC has pretty much lost any chance of making it into the playoffs at this point. They’ll have to work on “sealing the deal” and capitalizing on their early successes in matches if they’re going to do better next season. They’ve got a lot of good talent on the team – they just have to develop it.

Red Dawn moves on to play Blood Brothers next week on Pipeline. Pipeline has traditionally been a fairly weak map for the reconstituted RD. Blood Brothers is also a good CQB team and I can see RD having some difficulties fending them off. I’m still giving the nod to RD but the score will probably be close (7-5).

Not that it really matters one way or the other (as far as the outcome of the match is concerned) but force-Recon played iog in a 4 vs 6 situation.
