TWL Halo Ladders moving to Halo CE

With HaloCE being released last week, many improvments have come from this free, downloadable Halo, which is a long-awaited upgrade to HaloPC. With Gearbox offering support for HaloCE and with the upcoming patch, the few bugs that do exist with CE will hopefully be fixed.

We know that many players/teams that play Halo on TWL also play on other community ladders/leagues, and we feel that most of the community wants to move to HaloCE. We want to make sure our players can compete on all ladders and do so playing the same version of Halo. Many server companies are charging to switch from HaloPC to HaloCE and vice versa, and that's just to much burden for those Halo players/teams.

With this being the case, during the next 2 weeks, teams will have the option of playing HaloPC or HaloCE for their matches. This is only if both teams agree on using HaloCE. If one team does not want to play a match using HaloCE until this 2 week period is up, then the match will be played using HaloPC.

As of 5/23/04, HaloCE will be mandatory for all TWL Halo Ladder matches.

While some might be skeptical or wish to stay with haloPC, we feel that HaloCE is the future of Halo on TWL. Yes, we might have to deal with this transitional period and growing pains with CE, but that's the case with every game. So if you are having problems with HaloCE or have seen a decrease in performance, make sure to tweak your settings, make sure you have the latest drivers, and make sure that you look for help from someone who can help you.

GL to everyone, and remember, this is a good thing, so have fun, respect your fellow gamers, and bring your best game to the matches!!

its not really a good thing... it should be a seperate halo ce ladder.. not moving them all to ce, its just going to cost clans more money to upgrade their servers..
plus the fact of all the bugs in halo ce. not everyone likes it.
we played a ce match last night... fuck sake, the game shut down half way through... CE should be optional not mandatory! the only reason this is happening is beacuse twl our being payed by the CE companys to do this..
err, no gearbox isn't paying anyone to switch.
Will downloads of the twl gametypes for CE be ready soon?
dude gage....HALOCE....sux man...i agreee with maniac and fab...there should be a seperate haloce ladder...that does eally sound like a good idea.
besides, you always say you guys don't wanna live in CAL's shadow, well guess what Rival and many other big clans HATE halo CE. if TWL stops following the crowd and stays halo PC, I'm sure that you'd get a larger following.
that...but i mean...CE doesnt even work for everyone...like myslef...i mean damn man...i jut got bumbed down from starting on my clan...just becuase i cant get into CE...wht kind of shit is that?

TWL HaloCE gametypes are now available for download. I've included a readme file to help people out with basic rcon commmands, file placements, and a sample init.txt file.

Look at it from this perspective. That would be like teams getting used to Halo 1.03, then Halo 1.04 coming out, and most of the community going to 1.04, but some teams don't like the changes for whatever reason, so they want a ladder made for 1.03 only. What good would a team have saying they are #1 at HaloPC, when everyone else is playing HaloCE? If only a few teams are playing HaloPC, is that a true gauge of that teams abilities? No to mention the fact that many problems we have faced on TWL because of different setups. Just for an example, the ladders allow all vehicles, while the league allows no vehicles. Do you know how many disputes we get just because there are 2 different setups? We are trying to generalize everything, make it easier for everyone to understand, and most importantly, grown the Halo competitive community.

CAL and TWL serve 2 different purposes. I play on both, so I know why they are different, and the pro's and con's that come with it. I remember when HaloPC came out, and teams bitched and moaned for weeks until patch after patch corrected these problems. THe same thing will be true with HaloCE, and HaloCE has possibilities for updates and more configurations (and support), all of which are dead with HaloPC. Not to mention the fact that many game server hosting companies are charging teams extra to have access to the 2 different gametypes. We are simplifying this also by making all ladders and leagues HaloCE.

I know that some people are having problems with HaloCE, and people had problems with HaloPC when it first came out also. I will be posting a help thread in the forums with basic Q&A to help people out (rcon commands, drivers, specific hardware problems, etc), but I would suggest posting specific technical questions on gearboxsoftware's forums section. There are a lot of helpful people there, some of whom have probably had the same problems as you are having.

Keep in mind guys. My sole purpose is to make TWL Halo a fun, yet competitive place for everyone. Will 100% of the players/teams be happy? Never. But I promise to do the best I can to help shape and mold TWL Halo into something the community respects, enjoys being a part of, and most of all, targeting different specific needs/wants for each team.

err, sorry but if teams complained about the differences between 1.03 and 1.04 they need to learn what that patch did. It changed nothing about gameplay, it was only a security patch for gamespy. Anything changed about gameplay was imagined.

I don't see it as simplifying. There really aren't that many updates needed for halo pc, minus the netcode, which pretty much everyone is used to now anyway. We shouldn't switch to Halo CE until these bugs are worked out. Shooting someone on Halo CE if you don't have a constant ping is like a complicated guessing game. Lead isn't constant. And you just gotta love the CTD's.

Many of these issues the people in gearbox won't know how to fix. Trust me there is so far no fix for the CTD's. We're still trying to figure out which drivers work best with the fast shaders.
wow, some one's got a lotta time on their hands...maniac... hahaha. any how, i gotta agree wit everyone dat's complainin, CE is still too buggy to be used. i mean for da love of gaming, at least start converting after they come out wit da patch. i have no objections to changin to CE, if meant my teammates wont magically quit. come on now, at least wait till some of this stuff is fixed b4 u make a switch.

err...wtf is CTD?
crash to desktop
yeah i believe a switch to halo ce is a waste, u need to wait till the new patch come out and compare the two to see which one is better. ok how can u choose the ce over the new patch, that hasnt even come out yet! how is thsi in the good of twl? wahoo ce has new features no boby cares, they ovly care about good game play. ok let me see, hmmmmmm good game play new features. which one would u pick seriously. if you do make a change u will havew alot less clans and players on twl this s a bad move for twl amn bad move. u cant just change bec u think its right, u need to ask the playesr that play in it. put tow divisions on halo pc and ce and make everyone happy and anyway what is up with the stupid rules like no vehicles in bases why?
why si that a rle why can the rules be u play each other in w/e way u want and the winners win and the losers lose why do you have to make it so complicated, complicated = no fun. fewer rules = happier gamers.
HaloCE was/is the only update that is ever going to happen to HaloPC. The future of Halo rests in how many players switch over to HaloCE. Gearbox will put out a patch for HaloCE, but only if more people are playing it.

A catch 22 situation gentlemen. Start recruiting people to play HaloCE, and they will patch the few bugs it has. It is the only hope for Halo.
I agree with Gage. The future of Halo (until Halo 2 comes out) is either the long, slow decline that we were already seeing, or the acceptance of Halo CE. CE offers more than just a few bells and whistles. The ability to play new maps alone should justify the move to CE, but in addition to that we have many new features that make the game more playable, such as the buddy indicators. The new server features are also wonderful, such as the log files. It makes spotting smurfs much easier, as well as allowing for the tracking of kills/flags/etc. And if Gearbox is inspired to continue support, we will get features that make league play much better, such as demo recording and match-casting.

Yes, Halo CE felt different, but that is something that a good player will adapt to. There is nothing in the playability of CE that makes it impossible to become as skillful as you were in Halo PC; it just requires practice. I personally like the changes in the netcode, and think that it has made pistoling moving targets a little easier, especially when your pings are not below 35.

Any technical difficulties can be worked out, just as they had to be worked out with the original game when it was released. Our clan had no technical troubles making the conversion. We just had to re-learn how to shoot and drive a little. We did. Most server operators allow you to select PC or CE at no additional charge, so there is no financial burden.

And, as Gage stated, from the perspective of Gearbox (and Microsoft), CE is it. You either have to live with Halo PC as it is or adopt CE to get any future improvements. Halo PC was in a steady decline (as indicated by Gamespy stats). Halo 2 (for PC) is a long way off. CE is the only hope we have of sparking new interest in Halo for a long time.

I’ve had old Halo PC users who stopped playing Halo months ago finally come back to check out the new maps. That’s encouraging. Now we need all the Halo players who never left Halo to switch. I stopped hosting ANY Halo PC servers to help this out. All four of my servers are now CE. I wish that all the good Halo PC servers would switch to CE so that the PC users who don’t know about CE would be forced to find out about it and try it.

OK, that’s my two cents. Let the flaming continue…
its tru dat there's gonna no more patches for pc, ce is it as far as dat's concerned.

i dont like da netcode at all. it gives people wit lower pings even more of an advantage than ever. you can barely land a shot above 100 ping. i used to rape in pc even wit 166 pings usin good o' pistol/sniper. not so wit ce, it changes based on ur ping. leadin shots is way inconsistent at times, even on da same server. even wit high pings in pc, da lead rate is da same at least.

my worse complaint is the crashing, and in my case, i dont even crash, i jus completely freeze. no alt+ctrl+del, cuz dat dont work, i have to reset da machine. now imagine dat in a match. when ur up 2-0 wit 4 min on da board. u freeze, and come back to see ur ties 2-2 cuz u took so damn long to load every fucking (i used a "g" in dat one, so u kno i'm pissed as can be bout dat, heh) thing up again.

i do admit tho, names on top of teammates is good.

yea, its a double standard. a lot dont like to play ce, but if no one plays ce means no patches, no fixes... til eventually no one plays halo at all...
