Does anyone know where I can get the 'Bootcamp FR' map? That is a really nice Bootcamp map... especially for when my terrible ISP cable is having fits and I'd like to sharpen my aim.
you can't get it, they won't release it to the public because...well, i don't know why
if you want to work on your aim go get the superduck maps or UTTC Warmup, at least the bots there fly
Allow me to share a story with you. Back in the day (as you can see by my domain) i played demo. Demo owned. Then i found a friend with the full tribes CD.
Full tribes was too large then. The demo community was small, and i was attached. However, full had the best variety. I forget the clan's name, but a guy created a map for full called "boot camp".
I asked him if i could see his source so i could make a demo compatible version of it. He declined. So i asked if i could use his idea, and where i could get some idea's on how to start. He pointed me to mods such as "skeet shoot" and "NPQ Training Grounds".
from there i began to create the original "996 BootCamp". that was a demo clan we had for a while there, so i named it after the clan.
i put a MASSIVE amount of time and effort into that map. enough so that i did, and still suffer from, extreme eye fatigue.
why is that important? i finnaly decided to release that map. all my hard work and effort was put on my website for anyone to download.
well, all of a sudden, i would see all these servers with the bootcamp mission type, but they would be called "[some n00bie who doesnt know anything about mapping] boot camp"
then finnaly, some dumbass took my map and "modified" it but managed to make people think that he was the original creator of the map. you may have seen it. "bozo boot camp". if you notice things in the map, they are just like my original 996 map, but crappier.
anyway, for a long time, i decided to not update the map since it had been stolen. yes, i knwo the game is open source, but theres is a LOT to be said for intellectual property.
one day, i noticed the owner of the "Q Ball" series of servers hosting a dedicated version of 996 bootcamp. i emailed him (great guy, named Questor ingame) and said that if he would never give out the coding, i would give him updates to the map, called "Boot Camp FR" fr is final release.
later, the pointed me to the "Total Ownage Competition" server owner, and then took down the Q Ball map due to computer problems.
that said, its being hosted there, and i may never release the map due to being unable to hide the source.
i did try to contact the guy that made fstat, as they encrypted their vol, but no luck with that.
if i could ever find a way to encrypt the vol for the map, i would release it for public download, but until then, you will have to play it on TOC.
sorry you cant download the map, but i have put so much effort into it (if youve played the map, you'd know just how much) and i dont want some skilless n00b to go into my source, find everything that says "TooCrooked" and change it to their name.
sorry for the long post, but ive got a lot of history into the map.
one more story.. the guy named bozo once emailed the Q Ball server owner asking if he could work on the map "with" me. this is stupid as my map is *much* better than his rip off of my map, so why would i need his help to make MY map? obviously he wanted to steal my source. it never happened becuase Questor is anything but a n00b.
again, sorry for the long post. hope i cleared up any confusion.
ritz of clan |TIA| made the original bootcamp. dont know what happened to them. he never released his map, and probably becuase he knew what happened to me would happen.
although you do provide some good points, not all people are newbs who want to rip your map.
its a great map, and it would be good if you could release to maybe a few more servers. tribes is way past its peak, and there is no real reason to limit bootcamp to one server. pls thanks

a lot of us put a lot of time into the game, but not all of us like to fuck over the community by keeping maps available only on one server
some newb stole your code, so what? did you get paid to make the map?
i will never understand people who need to keep their name on something, as though the popularity of it will make them better people
-----------------------------
first of all, id be "fucking over" the community if i was withholding something that was public domain in the first place. however, this is a concept that i scripted and intellectual property does not equal public domain.
secondly, "so what"? you obviously missed the part that i put a lot of time into tribes. see, a lot of people waste their time doing nothing but playing to increase their own happiness in the game. i attempted and released my first map to make OTHERS happy. and then it got stolen. my hard work got stolen (and i suffered physical issues due to time invested). you obviously have no idea about just how much time was put into this map based on your post, and thereofre, your argument is weak.
lastly, keeping ones name on a map is just like copywriting an idea. its a human want. its been around for thousands of years. but the thing is, no, they didnt pay me. i did it for free. that makes it even worse that someone stole from me. i put a lot of effort into something so that someone could steal it.
ill try the switch, but if i can use winvol to extract files still, then no go. there is nothing ive found that can extract the cs files from fstats vol. if you can find something that can (that is if you can help me prove that fstat isnt encrypted) then i would give up on trying to encrypt the map and just releaes it, but not a second sooner.
If being able to extract the files would make you stop, don't bother trying; I extracted everything from Fstat, and while all the .cs files have random garbage at the end, the code is intact
Winvol and Volumer can only see the file lists though, but that only stops generic idiots. Determined thieves will find out how :-/

there wasn't anything absolutely fanfuckingtastic in that map that warrants copyrighting it, lol
--------------------------------------
a buncha people who have torn my original release to shreds so they could "repackage" it speaks otherwise. also, again, my main thing is not that its so uberAmazing, but that i spent MASSIVE time working on it.
i can understand that you probably have never put much effort into anything, and therefore cannot understand the idea of "credit where credit is due". and i reiterate, its not just time spent working on it, though thats a big part, but also physical exertion trying to code the map. again, with the eyestrain. i spent a LOT of time coding this thing. people jacking the source is a big issue to me.
although you do provide some good points, not all people are newbs who want to rip your map.
its a great map, and it would be good if you could release to maybe a few more servers. tribes is way past its peak, and there is no real reason to limit bootcamp to one server. pls thanks
^^ agree's with above statement, toocrook, your a great guy and i feel for you with that whole eye strain issue, however now that you've cleared things up, and now that your story is availiable for everyone to read, you should release the final version...b/c like devik said tribes is dying and anything new is much appreciated by all
I went to both the sites xpdnc and shtbrkd00 said and got both maps and installed them on Team Neglect's Server: Team[N]
Right now it's running 996 BootCamp with no probs that I can see. Enjoy!
P.S. Just from trying it out tonight, all I can say is "Great Job" TooCrooked. I can't friggen imagine the work that went into 996 BootCamp!

This one's tricky. You have to use imaginary numbers, like eleventeen...
yeah, i only have a map in competition and am converting the t2 maps to t1
if thats true, then why hate? either no one has found your maps worthy enough to rip them, therefore you cant identify with my situation (which is the most likely) or your map had so little work put into it, regardless of its usage, that you cant compare it to my work. either works.
i will put the map out sometime, but its also still in beta. i have had to do a lot to try and make it fair, and every time i get on, someone exploits something else.
and if youre wondering abotu the bots, i have no idea what algorythm they use to shoot at people. i just knwo there is a variable that makes them more or less accurate and i had played with it.
ok, since i'm a nice guy i'll tell you how to stop people from stealing the map
open the editor, randomize the terrain, pick a different terrain type, and write your name across the ground
you'll have to readjust everything, but so will anyone that wants to steal the map (and most newbs wouldn't know how to do that anyway)
brontez did it with Control
from the cmd screen it'll show your name
people can still steal the code, but they'd have to spend at least as long as you did moving objects to steal the entire map (and the code is available from other sources, you just have to know where to look...i have around 150 t1 scripts so i think that getting code is easy, others may not know where to look)
and if you need help making sure your name is on it permanently, upload it to the RDB at Tribalwar, or give it to me and i'll upload it (i have admin status and can change who uploaded it to the owner)
there's really no way to get a map out there without some idiot stealing code, but only the newbs fall for it :P
if you REALLY want to make sure your name is associated with it, when you release it ask for a News article at TW
they could rip my maps, but who the fuck cares? are you gettng famous over this?
i live content in the knowledge that everyone on TWL plays my map and very few play yours, so whether or not it's "worthy" by your standards is moot
btw, until you model all your own bases and actually use the terrain editor (which you didn't), you can't talk about "work"
first of all, youre a moron. i dont know jack about your maps, but i do know this - they are not as intricate as my map is. mine is a map/scripting combination.
secondly, you missed the point. "they could rip my maps"... could, but havent. your maps dont have the intrigue my single map does (i say this having never played any of your maps). therefore, we can come to a very obvious conclusion of which if you have to ask, you will never know.
i am no longer going to reply directly to you or about anything related to you/from you. you have taken some personal grudge against me that was unecessary. if you truly dont care about my map or my reputation, cease your mindless posting to this thread.
i will leave it up to the community to decide who has good maps. i dont mean between me and you (because i couldnt care less) i mean by the fact that many join the server my map is being hosted on.
this is my only focus, is to provide the community with a good concept.
am i becoming famous? probably not, but i find it quite a honor that in what could be perceived as the waning years of full T1 that my map has such appeal.
this is the last i speak directly or indirectly to you. please do not reply if you truly dont care, and i truly pose no threat to you.
to answer Poo's Q, there are two versions of my map: 996 bootcamp and FR. fr is the one in beta and which cannot be downloaded.
xpdnc that is a retarded idea. im sure he doesnt want his map to look all gay with a bunch of words on it. if i wanted to read i wouldnt play tribes i would READ A BOOK.
crooked: how do u do the cheats in bootcamp? pm me in irc
